Patrol Sergeant

Patrol Sergeant City of Independence, Missouri Seniority level Mid‑Senior level Employment type Full‑time Job function Other, Information Technology, and Management Industries Government Administration Essential Duties and Responsibilities Supervises and participates in accident investigation, traffic control, and record‑keeping activities of the department. Assists in criminal investigations. May perform routine patrols. Assigns and briefs officers at the beginning of shifts. Monitors performance of officers, conducts performance appraisals, and administers disciplinary actions. Responds to emergency scenes. Reviews police officer reports and prepares reports as required. Issues citations. Serves warrants and subpoenas and appears in court. Books and transports prisoners. Takes and investigates complaints. May perform routine maintenance on law‑enforcement vehicles. Performs additional duties as assigned. Qualifications Knowledge of the principles of modern police administration and accepted practices and procedures of police science. Knowledge of criminal law with particular emphasis on the apprehension, arrest, and prosecution of law violators and preservation of evidence. Ability to analyze and interpret police problems and criminal evidence. Ability to acquire cooperation of others in and out of the department. Ability to establish and maintain effective public relations. Ability to effectively supervise subordinates. Ability to analyze situations and adopt a quick, effective, and reasonable course of action. Education and Experience Completion of high school or GED required. Associates degree or two years of college‑level coursework related to law enforcement. Three years of law‑enforcement experience required at Independence Police Department. Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications is preferred. Special Requirements A current Kansas driver’s license. Must be 21 years of age. Must have completed Basic Recruit Training with the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center. Must complete any advanced training as assigned, and maintain KLETC certification. Must be available to work nights, overtime, shifts, and weekends. Physical Requirements Primarily moderate to occasionally intense physical effort is required. The individual must be able to sit, stand, walk, carry, climb, push, pull, reach, kneel, crawl, grasp, speak, and listen for extended periods of time. Working Conditions Work involves frequent exposure to unpleasant elements such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, loud noises, chemicals, etc. #J-18808-Ljbffr City of Independence, Missouri
