Nurse Practitioner II‑Inpatient Correctional Health Services Overview This position is intended to fill a vacancy in Correctional Health Services and establish an eligible list for future vacancies. Typical Duties Elicit, record, and review medical histories and perform acute primary care examinations (pre‑employment, annual, periodic, and routine physicals) for patients ranging from newborn to geriatric, utilizing a problem‑oriented medical record. Provide general health instruction, family planning guidance, and specific medical education to patients, clients, and families. Coordinate individual and family health management using physician resources or community agencies, including referral for family planning, STD, AIDS, drug abuse, child care, and hygiene services. Conduct early diagnostic examinations (vision, hearing, pap smears, etc.), order lab tests, radiology, and cardiology studies, and interpret results to take action on abnormalities. Administer immunizations and injections. Identify medical, surgical, and psychiatric conditions requiring immediate consultation, treat conditions, and manage chronic illnesses according to physician protocols, including medication dispensing or administration. Provide prenatal care, postpartum follow‑up, newborn and well‑child examinations, comprehensive health screenings, and pediatric illness treatment. Assess patients’ emotional condition, counsel on psychosocial issues, and provide emergency treatment or referral for acute emotional upset. Work in hospitals, outpatient, custodial, public health, satellite, and mobile settings; make home and school visits; lead ancillary clinic staff; and coordinate clinic activities. Oversee nursing or medical students and other providers as assigned. Assist in quality assurance by reviewing clinic charts and conducting audits to ensure adequate medical management and follow‑up; provide consultation to other providers. Maintain accurate records and complete required forms and questionnaires. Participate in meetings, workshops, committees, and in‑service training sessions. Minimum Qualifications Education: Completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner training program at an accredited college, university, or certified program. Experience: Two years as a Nurse Practitioner. Licenses & Certificates: Current registration as a nurse and certification as a Nurse Practitioner in California; current possession of a furnishing license through the California Board of Registered Nursing. Special Qualifications: Must be credentialed and granted privileges through the San Joaquin General Hospital Committee on Interdisciplinary Practice within ninety (90) days of appointment; temporary privileges may be granted pending approval. Knowledge General procedures, techniques, and equipment used in family medicine, community health, mental health, and professional nursing; medical terminology; hospital and clinic routines; full range of medical conditions relevant to the specialty; maternal and child health practices; basic laboratory procedures; substance abuse treatment; public and mental health community agencies; human behavior principles, including mental illness causes and treatment; medical record keeping; cultural considerations; communicable disease prevention and treatment. Ability Elicit and record complete medical histories; perform physical examinations; identify conditions requiring physician consultation; follow treatment protocols; communicate effectively; observe and evaluate emotional condition; interpret laboratory data; provide health instruction; lead and train staff; work independently when physician oversight is absent; manage high‑risk clientele. Physical/Mental Requirements Frequent standing, walking, occasional pushing/pulling, bending, and squatting; occasional lifting (≤5 lbs) and lifting/turning people; frequent color perception, eye/hand coordination, peripheral vision, depth perception, and reading; occasional holding and repetitive motion; constant hearing and speaking; occasional emergency situations and hazardous material exposure; frequent exposure to trauma, grief, and death; constant public contact, decision making, concentration; frequent exposure to noise.
