Wastewater Operator

Job Overview The Wastewater Operator plays a key role in operating and maintaining equipment necessary for wastewater treatment at Smithfield. Responsibilities include operating critical equipment, monitoring process data, collecting samples, and performing minor repairs. Responsibilities Operate pumps, conveyors, blowers, chlorinators, vacuum filters and other wastewater treatment equipment. Monitor charts, flow meters and gauges to detect and address equipment malfunctions. Collect and analyze wastewater samples, preparing laboratory work and creating process reports. Support the site’s Environmental and Water goals to ensure safe and compliant operations. Perform additional duties as assigned. Qualifications High school diploma or GED. 2+ years of relevant experience in wastewater treatment. Class I Wastewater License (or ability to acquire within 3 years of employment). Class I Water License (or ability to acquire within 2 years of employment). Ability to work long hours, weekends, and on-call as required. Strong organizational skills and ability to handle multiple assignments simultaneously. Basic understanding of wastewater chemistry (BOD, solids, pH, metals) and ability to perform required calculations. Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and company software packages. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Team‑oriented, approachable and respectful. Physical Demands & Work Environment The plant environment includes wet or humid conditions, extreme cold and heat, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, and chemicals. Tasks may involve lifting and moving up to 50 pounds, standing, walking, using stairs and ladders, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling. Noise levels are generally moderate but can be loud in the production area. The position requires alternate shifts and some weekend work. Computer use, navigation of company software, and presentation of information to diverse audiences are also part of the role.
