Police Officer Full-time position. Starting annual salary: $50,974 (Uncertified) – $62,549 (Certified). Open until filled. FLSA: Non-Exempt. Bargaining: AFSCME Local 601. A police officer is responsible for the efficient performance of required duties conforming to the rules, regulations, and general orders contained herein. Duties shall consist of, but are not limited to, general police responsibilities necessary to the safety and good order of the community. The officer shall: Identify criminal offenders and criminal activity and, where appropriate, apprehend offenders and participate in subsequent court proceedings. Reduce the opportunities for the commission of crime through preventive patrol and other measures. Aid people who are in danger of physical harm. Facilitate the movement of vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Identify potentially serious law enforcement or governmental problems. Promote and preserve the peace. Provide emergency services. Work weekends, holidays, unscheduled overtime and night shifts. Police officer position is non-supervisory. Duties are performed on an assigned shift under the general guidance of the Police Chief or Sergeant. Essential Duties Exercise authority consistent with obligations imposed by the oath of office. Accountable to superior officer. Promptly obey legitimate orders. Coordinate efforts with other department members for teamwork. Communicate to superiors and fellow officers all pertinent field information. Respond punctually to all assignments. Record information concerning events that occurred since the last tour of duty. Record activity during tour of duty in the prescribed manner. Maintain weapons and equipment in a functional, presentable condition. Assist citizens requesting assistance or information, explaining jurisdiction and suggesting alternatives. Secure, receive, and properly transport all evidence and property coming into custody. Answer questions from the public, counsel juveniles and adults when necessary, and refer to appropriate agencies. Preserve the peace at public gatherings, neighborhood disputes, and family quarrels. Serve or deliver warrants, summonses, subpoenas, and other papers promptly and accurately. Confer with prosecutors and testify in court. Accomplish other general duties as assigned or become necessary. Cooperate with efforts of other law‑enforcement agencies. Specific Duties and Responsibilities Patrols an assigned area for general purposes of crime prevention and law enforcement. Be thoroughly familiar with the assigned route, including residents, merchants, businesses, roads, alleyways, paths, etc.; report crime-contributing conditions. Apprehend persons violating the law or wanted by the police. Complete detailed reports on all crimes, vehicle crashes, and other incidents requiring police attention. Submit arrest reports and required crime reports when an arrest is made. Complete an investigation report when property is recovered or additional information is discovered. Preserve any serious crime scene until a Sergeant or Investigator arrives. Conduct public assembly checks. Perform building security checks. Observe and interview suspicious persons. Issue traffic citations. Be alert for and report fires. Report street lights and traffic signals out of order, street hazards and conditions that endanger public safety. Check schools, parks, and playgrounds. Respond to any public emergency. Conduct a thorough investigation of all offenses and incidents within the area of assignment and scope of activity, collecting evidence and recording data to aid in identification, apprehension, and prosecution of offenders. Remain alert to conditions that may lead to crime and take preventive action, informing superiors promptly. Respond to situations brought to the officer’s attention during routine patrol or when assigned by radio, rendering first aid when qualified and assisting persons needing police services. Remain on assigned patrol throughout the tour of duty except when an emergency or authorized temporary absence occurs. Patrol areas giving particular attention to locations with high crime hazard, avoiding fixed routes and frequently alternating positions. Be alert for nuisances, obstacles, defects or other conditions that may endanger or hinder public safety. Maintain patrol vehicle: ensure mechanical soundness, cleanliness, completeness of equipment, and proper fuel level. Inspect at start of duty, remove keys when unattended, use only assigned vehicles, operate radio per FCC regulations, maintain radio equipment, and keep gas tank full at shift start. Takes measures to direct the flow of traffic during congestion; notifies supervisor if extended absence from duties is required. Direct and expedite traffic flow at assigned intersections, enforcing parking ordinances and motor vehicle laws, and ensuring free flow. Enforce parking ordinances and motor vehicle laws. Stay alert to traffic safety conditions, reporting to the sergeant. Respond immediately to traffic post calls for emergency police service, notifying the sergeant. Wear prescribed traffic safety clothing (Traffic Vest) and equipment. Cooperate with efforts of other law-enforcement agencies. Non-Essential Duties The duties listed above are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Qualifications Knowledge of resources available to the department, particularly regarding juveniles. Knowledge of police investigative techniques and identification methods. Understanding of rules of evidence and search and seizure laws. Ability to deal effectively with juveniles and adults. Skill in questioning and interviewing. Ability to organize and prepare clear, concise oral and written reports. Skill in the use of firearms and police equipment. Physical ability and endurance. Establishing effective working relationships with juveniles, parents, school officials, fellow workers, and the public. Education and Experience High school degree or equivalent. Certified completion of New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy. Two years of patrol experience. Must pass City drug testing. No felony convictions or convictions for a crime of moral turpitude. Equipment Used Computers, fax machine, copiers, sleuth computer program, Microsoft Office programs, video and still cameras, digital recorders (video and audio), tape recorders, firearms, handcuffs, expandable baton, OC spray, radio, police vehicle with emergency equipment, templates, measuring devices, radar, police tazers, flares, and other necessary equipment. Physical Demands Must be able to frequently lift or move heavy objects or persons; vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Must be able to sit, stand, talk, and hear; use hands and fingers to feel or control objects; climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, run, and physically subdue combative subjects. Shift work may include days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Work Environment Work is performed inside and outside in all types of weather conditions. Noise level is moderate.
