We're looking for someone who is passionate about te taiao (our natural environment) and keen to be out in the sunshine this summer! This is a 4-month entry-level position to support the Hydrology monitoring programme at Waikato Regional Council. A great opportunity to apply study knowledge & gain practical experience. Kick-start your career in Hydrology by building on core skills in the field, data, reporting and networking while exploring the Waikato rohe. Have an interest in Hydrology and keen to be outdoors? Currently pursuing or recently completed an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in a scientific field or have experience in environmental work. Physically fit and able to work full days in challenging remote environments. A strong focus on working safely outdoors, a confident swimmer, and have a full driver's licence. Available to work full time from 9 November 2026 until 26 February 2027 Mō te tūranga | About the role: Help maintain and support our flood and low-flow monitoring network. This hands-on role offers the chance to work in rivers and streams, collect important environmental information, and gain valuable experience alongside a passionate team of hydrology professionals. If you enjoy being outdoors, working as part of a team, and learning new skills, we'd love to hear from you! This position will involve: Based out of our Hamilton office. Support monitoring work in the Whangamarino wetlands. Gain experience in field hydrology - Surveying, sensors, dataloggers, river gauging and 12-volt electrical system. Be mentored by industry experts, balancing independence and teamwork. Explore remote parts of the Waikato rohe, sometimes working long days in the field. Prioritize a high level of health and safety, with training provided (e.g. first-aid course, swift-water training). Guaranteed time off from 25 December - 4 January over the Christmas/New Year period. This is a 4-month fixed-term, full-time position, ending 26 February 2027.
