Emergency Department Technician

Shifts and Position 9 full‑time night shifts with rotation, every other weekend/holiday rotation. Shifts: 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM (36 hours per week). Union position: Yes. Posted: 6/12/2026. Job Summary UPMC Altoona is hiring a night shift Emergency Department Technician. Shift differential for nights is $1.60. We seek a team player who is flexible and adaptable in a high‑pace, demanding environment. Education and Formal Training Required High School Diploma or GED. Completed program in Medical Assisting, LPN, Paramedic, EMT, or Surg Tech. Experience Required Basic knowledge regarding care of patients and operation of monitors. Responsibilities Respond effectively in emergency situations. Assist RN/physician in patient admission, orientation, transfer, and discharge. Utilize restraints and protective mechanisms with proper documentation. Assist with treatment as directed: Foley catheter insertion, catheter irrigations, oral/nasal suctioning, enemas, dressing changes, perineal care, thoracotomies, chest tube insertions, and other trauma procedures; perform ECGs, immobilization, oxygen administration, and suturing. Perform venipuncture and intravenous access. Record vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry). Adhere to universal precautions and occupational exposure policies. Participate in patient care conferences and provide input in care planning and patient/family teaching, including CPI processes. Observe, report, and document all unusual symptoms, condition changes, and care delivered per DEM policy. Assist patients with bed mobility: turning, lifting, positioning, and ambulating. Maintain cubicles and equipment in orderly fashion; clean, restock, and order supplies as necessary; maintain instruments and trays. Complete ongoing age‑specific and annual competency validations via defined mechanisms. Maintain proficiency in patient care testing as defined in lab evaluation criteria. Call for patient in a manner conducive to safety and comfort, adhering to instructions from Clinical Manager or physician and established routines. Specific Abilities Adapt to constant change inherent in healthcare. Maintain good working relationships with the Medical Staff, Administration, and other departmental personnel involved in patient care. Exercise nursing and technology skills. Demonstrate supervisory techniques for managing patients and personnel. Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances Certification in BLS according to level of training. CPR required per AHA standards within 30 days of hire. Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal. Act 33 renewal. Act 34 renewal.
