RN Emergency Department

Job Summary:

The Emergency Department Registered Nurse (RN) provides professional nursing care across the lifespan in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment. The RN performs comprehensive patient assessments, develops individualized care plans, administers medications and treatments, and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to promote optimal patient outcomes and safety. This role requires strong clinical judgment, rapid response to emergencies and trauma, and culturally sensitive, patient-centered care in accordance with organizational standards and evidence-based practice. Responsibilities:

• Perform comprehensive patient assessments and develop individualized plans of care.
• Implement and evaluate nursing interventions and patient responses.
• Administer medications and treatments safely and accurately per provider orders and policy.
• Recognize changes in patient condition and initiate appropriate interventions or escalation of care.
• Provide patient and family education related to care, medications, and discharge needs.
• Deliver culturally responsive, patient-centered care.
• Exercise independent nursing judgment consistent with scope of practice.
• Collaborate with providers and interdisciplinary team members to coordinate care and facilitate referrals and follow-up.
• Document assessments, interventions, and outcomes accurately and timely in electronic health records.
• Participate in quality and performance improvement activities and maintain required competencies and certifications.
• Provide guidance and delegation to ancillary staff and support orientation, mentoring, and education of staff and students.
• Float to other departments or assignments as needed.
• Respond effectively to trauma, medical emergencies, and disaster situations.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Associate's degree in Nursing from an accredited program.
• Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse license in the State of Alaska.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
• Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification.
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification.
• Clinical competency certification within 3 months of hire and every 3 years thereafter.
• High Risk Competency certification within 3 months of hire and annually thereafter.
• Strong clinical judgment, organization, prioritization, and communication skills.
• Proficiency with electronic health records and clinical systems.
• Ability to lift, push, pull, and move up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC) certification.
• Experience working in emergency or high-acuity clinical environments.
• Experience with complex medical equipment and procedures related to emergency nursing.

Special Considerations:

• On-call availability may be required.
• Must be competent in the use of all specialty-specific equipment.
• Ability to work in a moderate-to-high noise clinical environment.
• Compliance with safety, infection prevention, and regulatory requirements.
• Accountability for nursing decisions and outcomes in accordance with Alaska statutes and organizational policy.

Scheduling:

• Work schedule includes shifts in a 24/7 emergency department setting.
• Shift types may include day, evening, night, weekends, and holidays as assigned.
• Float assignments to other departments may be required.
