About the Position

We are an established and growing shipyard located in Portland, OR and seeking a Marine Structural Engineer to join our marine engineering and naval architecture team.

This position focuses specifically on the structural design and engineering of marine vessels, supporting projects from initial concept and engineering analysis through shipyard fabrication, repair, refit, and installation.

The ideal candidate has a strong structural engineering foundation, marine vessel experience, and the ability to work closely with naval architects, shipyard personnel, clients, and classification societies.

Responsibilities

• Perform structural analysis and design for marine vessels and vessel structures.
• Conduct global and local FEA, fatigue assessments, plate buckling checks, and marine load calculations.
• Develop structural calculations, engineering reports, specifications, and drawing packages.
• Design and evaluate hull structures, decks, bulkheads, framing, foundations, and structural modifications.
• Work in accordance with applicable ABS, DNV, USCG, AISC, and other marine standards.
• Review shipyard fabrication drawings and provide engineering support during vessel construction, repair, and refit.
• Evaluate weld procedures and structural fabrication details.
• Troubleshoot structural issues and field modifications during vessel construction or repair.
• Coordinate with naval architects, mechanical engineers, project managers, clients, and shipyard personnel.
• Support design reviews with clients and classification societies.
• Assist with structural validation and approval of engineering deliverables.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil/Structural Engineering, Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, or a related ABET-accredited discipline.
• FE/EIT certification required.
• Minimum 3 years of structural engineering or structural design experience.
• Experience involving marine vessels, shipyards, vessel construction, repair, or refit strongly preferred.
• Experience with structural engineering and analysis software such as ANSYS, SACS, STAAD.Pro, RISA, or OrcaFlex.
• Proficiency with 2D/3D CAD software such as AutoCAD, Rhino, or ShipConstructor.
• Familiarity with marine structural codes and standards, particularly ABS, DNV, and USCG requirements.
• Strong technical writing, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Active PE license in Civil, Structural, Marine, or related engineering.
• Master's degree in Structural Engineering, Ocean Engineering, or Naval Architecture.
• Shipyard, drydock, vessel construction, repair, or refit experience.
• Experience with marine structural systems, welding, fabrication, and structural modifications.
• Knowledge of vessel loads, hydrodynamics, vessel motions, or structural response analysis.
• Experience working directly with classification societies or regulatory authorities.
