Certified Respiratory Therapist

About the Role:

The Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) plays a critical role in providing specialized respiratory care to patients across various healthcare settings in the United States. This position involves assessing, treating, and managing patients with acute and chronic respiratory conditions to improve their breathing and overall lung function. The CRT collaborates closely with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized respiratory care plans. Additionally, the role requires monitoring patient progress, adjusting treatments as necessary, and educating patients and their families on respiratory health and equipment use. Ultimately, the CRT ensures the delivery of high-quality respiratory therapy services that enhance patient outcomes and quality of life.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Current certification as a Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
  • Valid state licensure or eligibility to obtain licensure to practice respiratory therapy in the United States.
  • Completion of an accredited respiratory therapy program.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Strong understanding of respiratory anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential from the NBRC.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Experience working in critical care or emergency department settings.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) systems.
  • Additional training or certification in neonatal or pediatric respiratory care.
Responsibilities:
  • Perform diagnostic tests such as arterial blood gas analysis and pulmonary function testing to evaluate respiratory status.
  • Administer prescribed respiratory therapies including oxygen therapy, aerosol medications, and mechanical ventilation support.
  • Monitor and document patient responses to treatments, adjusting care plans in collaboration with the healthcare team.
  • Operate and maintain respiratory therapy equipment, ensuring safety and compliance with healthcare standards.
  • Provide patient and family education on respiratory conditions, treatment plans, and proper use of respiratory devices.
  • Respond promptly to respiratory emergencies and provide life-support interventions as needed.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed patient records in accordance with regulatory and institutional policies.

Skills:

The Certified Respiratory Therapist utilizes clinical assessment skills daily to evaluate patient respiratory status and determine appropriate interventions. Effective communication skills are essential for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and educating patients and families about treatment plans and equipment use. Technical proficiency is required to operate and troubleshoot respiratory therapy devices and to perform diagnostic tests accurately. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills enable the therapist to respond swiftly to changes in patient conditions and emergencies. Additionally, organizational skills are important for maintaining detailed patient records and ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations.
