About the District

Oswego Community Unit School District 308 is a Pre-Kindergarten to 12th grade unit school district that serves the communities of Oswego, Aurora, Joliet, Montgomery, Plainfield, and Yorkville. The District is the 7th largest public school district in Illinois and serves nearly 17,000 students. The community of Oswego, IL is 68 square miles and located approximately 46 miles west of Chicago, IL within an easy commute to all the recreational and cultural activities the city has to offer.

General Description

Under the direction of the Director of Transportation and/or designee, the Vehicle Maintenance Assistant Bus Washer is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, appearance, and overall condition of District transportation vehicles. This position assists with routine vehicle maintenance activities and supports the Transportation Department in maintaining vehicles in a state of operational excellence that meets or exceeds applicable regulatory and District requirements. This position may also be required to operate school buses and other District vehicles when needed to support transportation operations and address staffing needs.

Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions

• Maintain the cleanliness and appearance of District school buses, vans, and other transportation vehicles.
• Develop and execute an effective and efficient vehicle washing and cleaning schedule.
• Operate large-vehicle wash equipment safely and effectively.
• Perform interior and exterior cleaning of District transportation vehicles.
• Assist with daily vehicle fluid checks and related vehicle inspections as directed.
• Conduct periodic inspections of vehicle interiors and exteriors to identify damage, deterioration, or repair needs.
• Report identified vehicle damage, maintenance concerns, and safety issues to the appropriate Transportation or Maintenance staff.
• Perform basic vehicle seat repairs and interior vehicle repairs as necessary.
• Assist with routine vehicle maintenance activities within the scope of the position.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe vehicle maintenance center and work area.
• Properly use and maintain power tools, equipment, cleaning supplies, and other materials necessary to perform assigned duties.
• Follow all applicable District procedures, safety requirements, and federal, state, and local regulations governing school transportation and vehicle operations.
• Operate District vehicles, including school buses, when necessary due to staffing shortages or operational needs.
• Drive assigned routes when needed and as directed by the Transportation Department.
• Respond to vehicle-related needs or emergencies when assigned, including situations that may require work outside the normal work schedule.
• Maintain appropriate records and documentation related to vehicle cleaning, inspections, repairs, and maintenance activities as required.
• Communicate effectively with Transportation staff, District employees, vendors, and members of the community.
• Exercise sound judgment and make timely decisions regarding routine vehicle and operational concerns.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with the appropriate school bus and passenger endorsements required by the State of Illinois.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with District staff, students, families, vendors, and community members.
• Ability to safely operate and use power tools and vehicle maintenance equipment.
• Knowledge of applicable Department of Transportation (DOT) daily vehicle fluid check requirements.
• Knowledge and understanding of school bus seat repair and interior vehicle maintenance.
• Ability to safely and effectively operate large-vehicle wash equipment.
• Ability to follow established safety procedures and properly use personal protective equipment.
• Ability to make sound, accurate, and timely decisions under routine and critical conditions.
• Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as a member of the Transportation team.
• Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position, including standing, walking, kneeling, reaching, handling, lifting, pushing, climbing, stooping, and carrying equipment and tools.
• Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment weighing at least 50 pounds.
• Ability and willingness to work varied schedules, including evenings, weekends, and emergency call-outs when necessary.
• Other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in an automotive and vehicle maintenance environment and may involve exposure to noise from vehicle maintenance and wash equipment, fumes, chemicals, and other materials associated with vehicle cleaning and maintenance. The position requires moderate to heavy physical labor and may require extended periods of standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working around large vehicles and equipment.

Environmental Conditions

The employee may be exposed to:

1. Diesel fuel, gasoline, motor oil, cleaning agents, and other vehicular fluids, chemicals, and fumes.

2. Slippery, wet, icy, snowy, or uneven surfaces while walking, cleaning, maintaining, or operating vehicles.

3. Road construction, unsafe drivers, congested traffic, and other roadway hazards when operating vehicles.

4. Body fluids and potentially infectious or airborne pathogens.

5. Extreme temperatures, including excessive heat and cold.

6. Loud or continuous noise generated by vehicles, vehicle wash equipment, power tools, and other maintenance equipment.

7. Dust, dirt, debris, and other materials associated with vehicle cleaning and maintenance.

8. Confined or restricted work areas within or around District vehicles.

9. Various indoor and outdoor work environments and changing weather conditions.

10. Situations requiring travel away from the primary work location and outside District boundaries.

Physical Demands

The employee must be able to:

1. Bend, kneel, stoop, reach, climb, and work in various positions for extended periods.

2. Lift, carry, push, and pull at least 50 pounds during the normal workday.

3. Stand and walk for prolonged periods while performing vehicle cleaning, inspection, and maintenance duties.

4. Maintain balance while climbing, working from, or standing on ladders and other elevated surfaces.

5. Work safely in small, confined, or difficult-to-access areas within and around vehicles.

6. Operate power tools, vehicle wash equipment, and other equipment requiring manual dexterity and coordination.

7. Perform repetitive physical tasks involving reaching, grasping, handling, pushing, pulling, and lifting.

8. Work effectively in a noisy, busy, and sometimes distracting environment.

9. Safely enter and exit large school buses and other District vehicles throughout the workday.

10. Perform assigned duties safely and effectively under varying weather and environmental conditions.
