The Principal Storage Engineer is a senior technical leader responsible for defining and advancing the enterprise storage architecture and long‑term data infrastructure strategy. This role establishes standards, develops five‑year technology roadmaps, and designs secure, resilient, scalable, and cost‑effective storage platforms for business‑critical, analytics, and artificial intelligence workloads. The engineer serves as the organization’s storage subject‑matter expert and partners with infrastructure, cloud, security, data, application, architecture, finance, and vendor teams to translate business requirements into sustainable technology capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

• Define the enterprise storage vision, reference architecture, engineering standards, and five‑year roadmap across block, file, object, software‑defined, and hybrid storage services.
• Lead architecture decisions for on‑premises AI infrastructure, including high‑throughput and low‑latency storage for model training, inference, data pipelines, GPU platforms, and large unstructured datasets.
• Develop data placement, lifecycle, tiering, retention, encryption, immutability, replication, archival, and secure disposition patterns aligned with data governance, privacy, regulatory, and business requirements.
• Design highly available and recoverable storage solutions that meet performance, capacity, resilience, disaster recovery, and service‑level objectives.
• Create workload‑aligned storage service tiers and reusable architecture patterns for virtualized, containerized, database, analytics, and AI environments.
• Own capacity forecasting, performance modeling, technology refresh planning, and financial analysis to optimize capital and operating expenses.
• Evaluate emerging storage technologies and conduct proofs of concept, benchmarks, risk assessments, and total‑cost‑of‑ownership analyses.
• Provide technical leadership for platform modernization, migrations, consolidations, upgrades, and decommissioning initiatives with minimal business disruption.
• Establish observability, automation, infrastructure‑as‑code, configuration management, and self‑service capabilities that improve reliability and reduce operational effort.
• Partner with cybersecurity, risk, compliance, and data governance teams to strengthen controls, evidence, recoverability, and ransomware resilience.
• Serve as the escalation point for complex storage performance, availability, interoperability, and data integrity issues; lead root‑cause analysis and permanent corrective actions.
• Develop architecture documentation, standards, decision records, executive presentations, and investment recommendations for technical and business leadership.
• Mentor engineers, lead design reviews, and raise engineering practices across storage, backup, compute, network, cloud, and platform teams.
• Manage strategic technical relationships with Dell Technologies, Pure Storage, NetApp, IBM, and other infrastructure partners, including roadmap alignment, solution validation, support escalation, and commercial input.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
• Typically 10 or more years of enterprise infrastructure experience, including significant responsibility for storage engineering and architecture in large, complex environments.
• Demonstrated success creating multi‑year technology strategies, reference architectures, roadmaps, standards, and investment plans.
• Deep expertise in SAN, NAS, object storage, storage networking, replication, snapshots, data reduction, quality of service, and high‑availability design.
• Hands‑on architecture and engineering experience with Dell Technologies, Pure Storage, NetApp, and IBM storage platforms.
• Strong understanding of data governance, data classification, retention, legal hold, encryption, access control, privacy, compliance, and secure data disposal.
• Experience designing storage for on‑premises AI and high‑performance data platforms, including GPU‑intensive workloads, parallel data access, high‑bandwidth networking, and large‑scale data pipelines.
• Expertise in capacity planning, performance analysis, workload characterization, availability engineering, disaster recovery, and cyber‑recovery architecture.
• Experience integrating storage with Linux, Windows, virtualization, containers, Kubernetes or OpenShift, databases, backup platforms, and hybrid‑cloud services.
• Experience with automation and infrastructure‑as‑code using technologies such as Python, PowerShell, Ansible, Terraform, REST APIs, or equivalent tools.
• Strong business acumen with the ability to develop cost models, evaluate vendor proposals, quantify risk, and communicate recommendations to executive leadership.
• Excellent written, verbal, facilitation, and mentoring skills, with the ability to influence across organizational boundaries without direct authority.

Preferred Qualifications

• Relevant vendor or industry certifications in storage, cloud, security, networking, Kubernetes, or enterprise architecture.
• Experience supporting healthcare, financial services, or another highly regulated enterprise environment.
• Knowledge of NVMe, NVMe over Fabrics, Ethernet and Fibre Channel storage networking, parallel file systems, data lakes, and modern object‑storage architectures.
• Experience with FinOps, chargeback or showback, sustainability planning, and enterprise technology lifecycle management.

• A clear, funded, and regularly maintained five‑year storage roadmap aligned with business, application, data, cloud, and AI strategies.
• Improved platform availability, performance, recoverability, security, and engineering standardization.
• Accurate capacity forecasts and measurable reductions in unit cost, technical debt, platform complexity, and manual effort.
• Successful delivery of modernization and migration initiatives with controlled risk and minimal service disruption.
• Strong governance adoption, audit readiness, vendor accountability, and stakeholder confidence in storage investment decisions.

Work at Home Requirements

To ensure Home or Hybrid Home/Office employees’ ability to work effectively, the self‑provided internet service of Home or Hybrid Home/Office employees must meet the following criteria: At minimum, a download speed of 25 Mbps and an upload speed of 10 Mbps is required; wireless, wired cable or DSL connection is suggested. In certain roles, the minimum recommended internet speed required by Humana may not be sufficient for business needs. Humana reserves the right to require associates to upgrade their internet service if necessary. Work from a dedicated space lacking ongoing interruptions to protect member PHI / HIPAA information.

Travel

While this is a remote position, occasional travel to Humana’s offices for training or meetings may be required.

Pay Range

The compensation range below reflects a good faith estimate of starting base pay for full time (40 hours per week) employment at the time of posting. The pay range may be higher or lower based on geographic location and individual pay will vary based on demonstrated job related skills, knowledge, experience, education, certifications, etc.
$142,300 - $195,700 per year
This job is eligible for a bonus incentive plan. This incentive opportunity is based upon company and/or individual performance.
