SVP Neuroscience & Behavioral Medicine

Department: 10255 Neurosciences COE Admin Pay Range: $350,000.00 - $1,050,000.00 The Senior Vice President (SVP) of the Children's National Hospital Center for Neuroscience and Behavioral Medicine will provide clinical, academic, and administrative leadership to the Center of Excellence (COE) at Children's National Hospital, including inpatient work and outpatient clinics at CNH. The Center is comprised of multiple divisions, institutes and programs: Neurology, Epilepsy, Neurophysiology, Hearing & Speech, Neuropsychology, Psychology, Physical Medicine & Rehab, Neurosurgery, Psychiatry, Neurodevelopmental Pediatrics and Neurogenetics as well as institutes for Brain Tumor and Neurofibromatosis. The Center includes more than 400 employees. This position reports to the Executive Vice President, Chief Medical Officer (CMO). The SVP will be an academically accomplished, strategic, and visionary leader who assumes overall leadership of the assigned COE, including administrative and financial oversight of all the clinical, research, and educational activities of the Center. The SVP will be responsible for the successful financial performance of all clinical programs within the Center, full development of all the personnel and programmatic resources, continuation, and expansion of academic and clinical programs, and sustaining and improving clinical excellence, quality, and safety. This position will have the primary responsibility of supervising all Chiefs in the Center, including those leading Institutes in the Center. The SVP will be a member of Children's National leadership council and will work collaboratively across other COEs and programs. The SVP will work collaboratively with the CMO to recruit and retain Chiefs within the Center and the hiring and termination of all physicians. Minimum Education Medical Doctor (M.D.) (Required) Minimum Work Experience 10 years Post-training clinical and progressive management experience demonstrating progressive effectiveness in clinical leadership roles, preferably in neurology or behavioral health (Required) Required Skills/Knowledge Expertise in interpersonal communication. A leader with the vision, who can strive for excellence and the development of a world class organization. Collaborative team player and colleague who can work closely with others in a team-oriented setting. Excellent referring physician relations, skills and demonstrated success with medical staff partnerships. Recognized leader in a clinical or quality domain with demonstrated academic achievements and national prominence. Strong sense of urgency and ability to motivate others to succeed. Strong conflict management skills. Excellent communicator with solid interpersonal skills and abilities to represent Children's National effectively. Excellent planning, problem solving and time-management skills. Experience in physician billing and compliance. Required Licenses and Certifications Must be licensed or be eligible for licensure to practice medicine in the District of Columbia. (Required) Functional Accountabilities Vision and Strategy Maintain a view of the operational performance of the Center as it relates to the overall hospital and clinical excellence working collaboratively with different functional areas/departments to improve patient outcomes Develop sound and creative strategies to enhance care and assure optimal outcomes. Provide vision and leadership for patient care issues and patient satisfaction. Focus on the use of tools, expertise, and applications for continued quality improvement as a business strategy and enhance the leadership capacity to maintain a culture of quality. Create a work environment that fosters teamwork, cooperation, innovation, open communication, and respect. Together with the executive leadership team at CNH, become visible and recognized in the community and work collaboratively with political leaders, to advocate for the hospital and to help to maintain the strong support it currently receives in the Washington, DC area. Facilitate new care models to advance patient processes and systems of care. Support the advancement of health outcomes through implementing standardization in care by collaborating with medical, nursing and operations. Design, implement and execute plans to achieve successful outcomes of organizational goals. Strategic Planning Works closely with the CSO to support the strategic plan for services within the center, including short-term and long-term growth objectives. Partners with administrative and nursing and other clinical leaders to make decisions. Supports the strategic plan for department services, including short-term and long-term growth objectives. Plans, implements, directs, and evaluates assigned department objectives in support of the organization's strategic plan. Collect and analyze data to include patient/family experience and evaluate clinic and division level performance. Incorporate findings into plans to modify program and service delivery. Financial Performance Monitor key financial indicators to adjust budgets as necessary to maximize revenue and productivity, constantly focused on patient care and outcomes. Provide feedback to chiefs on their financial performance and hold them accountable for reaching their targets. Improve the financial performance and overall productivity of the Center. Collaborate with other COE leaders to develop budgets. Implement and monitor departmental budgets. Monitor financial performance relative to budget and identify and implement improvement efforts. Seek cost effective methods to maintain and grow the operation of the Center. Incorporate budget considerations in all planning and decision making. Human Capital Collaborate to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of recruitment and retention programs for physicians, leadership, and staff within the Center of Neuroscience and Behavioral Medicine. Establish efficient staffing patterns in accordance with standards of practice to achieve highest quality of patient care and to maximize operational efficiencies of the hospital. Recruit, coach, develop and retain qualified, top notch staff. Ensure a capable, highly committed and performance driven management team is in place. Demonstrate support with and deliver meaningful change that is best aligned with the institution's commitment to Diversity Equity & Inclusion. Ensure that performance evaluations, medical requirements, and all other organizational circuit breakers for all staff are complete and on time. Establish and maintain effective relationships with peers and leaders throughout the organization. Facilitate team development activities to enhance staff knowledge, skills, and abilities. Management & Operations Define success indicators and develop measures to hold COE divisions accountable. Meet regularly (at least monthly) with the Divisions' leadership to address all aspects of risk, especially clinical and financial. Role model expertise to maintain and/or enhance the organizational culture during periods of constant change in the health care environment. Provide mentorship to divisions regarding management and operations (both clinical and non-clinical). Meet regularly with hospital management staff and maintain work plans showing measurable achievements and to recognize individual and team accomplishments. Assist the physicians to build volume, high quality, and safety standards, to improve productivity and to create a high level of accountability among the physician leadership, in collaboration with the CMO. Internal and External Relationships Partner with multidisciplinary teams to advance improvements in patient safety, quality, and outcomes. Prioritize the working relationship with nursing and enhance inter-professional learning. Collaborate with the enterprise risk management process as it relates all aspects of risk, especially clinical. Engage with the external leaders to maintain real-time industry changes and new developments in the relevant areas. Make connections and foster external relationships to the benefit of Children's National. In collaboration with the CMO & CAO, assist the residents, fellows, and faculty of the Center to enhance the training, publications, and research to improve the care of pediatric patients. Philanthropy Work with the CMO and the Foundation leadership to solicit and secure major funding from philanthropic sources. Prioritize philanthropy among each division by encouraging faculty to partner with the development office on grateful patient family referrals, identification of funding priorities, and securing major gifts/grants from individuals, foundations, and corporations. Education and Research Provide operational oversight of collaborations between partnering research organizations, including staffing, budget management, contract management, and achievement of collaboration goals and objectives. Hold Chiefs in the Center accountable for the conduct of clinical research. In conjunction with the CMO and Chief Academic Officer, provide oversight and accountability for the conduct of clinical research led by Principle Investigators within the Center and Institutes. The disclosed salary range includes the minimum and maximum rates within which Children's National believes an individual's base pay rate will fall for this position. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the maximum of the pay range. The exact pay rate for this position will be based on a variety of factors in alignment with the Children's National compensation philosophy. These factors are legitimate and non-discriminatory including, but not limited to, the current market conditions; organizational needs; the individual's combination of prior work experience, level of education, knowledge, skills, and other qualifications. This base salary range does not include our comprehensive benefits package or any additional compensation for which this position may be eligible.
