Summary

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce positions to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

About the Position: Incumbent serves as a technical expert in health physics, radiation protection safety, and radiation risk assessment for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USAGE) national Hazardous, Toxic a Radioactive Waste (HTRW) Center of Expertise(CX).

Duties

Help

• Provide expert technical guidance, advice, and assistance regarding current accepted health physical, radiation protection safety, and radiation risk assessment methodologies, policies, and regulations.
• Identify, evaluate, and control radiological hazards.
• Provide expert guidance on radiation protection and risk assessment matters affecting environmental restoration projects nationwide.
• Develop, review, and recommend applicable technical policies, procedures, and other guidance materials pertaining to radiation protection safety, health physics, and radiation risk assessment.
• Review policies to ensure technical adequacy and compliance with applicable regulations, and directives.
• Serve as a knowledgeable source of toxicological and health data for radioactive substances/wastes.
• Interpret complex data relative to individual and radioactive chemicals and mixtures of such chemicals for which health related values have not been established.

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• This position requires Temporary Duty Travel (TDY) up to 25% of the duty time.
• This position is designated Tier 3, Non-Critical Sensitive, Moderate Risk and requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance Level as a condition of employment.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirements for Health Physicist:

1. Degree: natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.

2. Combination of education and experience courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A.

In addition to the basic requirement above, applicants must meet specialized experience.

Specialized experience: One year of specialized experience which includes:1) reviewing site documents for projects to ensure compliance with regulations; 2) interpreting toxicological and health physical data; 3) developing, reviewing, and/or recommending applicable technical policies and procedures; and 4) participating in meetings with contractors and agency stakeholders. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience aloneno substitution of education for experience is permitted.
