SWIM INSTRUCTOR

Instructs swimming lessons to the general public. Performs lifeguarding duties; keeps accurate records of participants' skills and participation. Knowledge of water safety, instructing swim lessons, and working with the general public is a plus. May train and supervise assigned staff in preparing, registering, operating, instructing, and lifeguarding the instructional program for the summer session. May handle staff scheduling; monitor, deposit, and report all revenues; keep an accurate record of funds and participation, assure all safety procedures are followed at all times, conduct in-service training for all lifeguards/WSI instructors. CPR/First Aid Certification, Water Safety Instructor training are required. Hours: 40 hours/week May-August; Age: 18+; Pay Rate: $15.40/hr. POSITION DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Lifeguard

PURPOSE OF POSITION

The purpose of this position is to supervise swimming pool patrons and ensure compliance with City safety and health rules and regulations. Duties and responsibilities include monitoring pool patrons, performing rescues and resuscitation, treating and reporting injuries and incidents, providing customer service, and completing related paperwork.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

• Monitors swimming pool patrons to ensure compliance with applicable City safety and health rules and regulations; takes corrective action as necessary.
• Performs water rescues and resuscitation as required.
• Prepares incident and injury reports and submits to supervisor.
• Renders general first aid to swimming facility patrons as required.
• Participates in maintenance of swimming pool and surrounding area.
• Checks safety equipment periodically to ensure proper functioning.
• Supervises assigned staff as directed; maintains records of staff schedules and hours.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

High school diploma or GED preferred, with three to six months of lifeguarding experience required; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.

• Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet and limbs in performing semi-skilled movements such as rapid swimming.
• Ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, involving lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling. Ability to handle, finger, and feel.
• Ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, forms, sounds, tastes, odors, textures etc. associated with objects, materials and ingredients.

ENVIRONMENTAL ADAPTABILITY

• Ability, in regard to environmental factors such as temperature variations, odors, toxic agents, violence, noise, vibrations, wetness, disease and/or dust, to work under mildly unsafe and uncomfortable conditions.
