Governance and Compliance Intern

State of South Carolina - First Steps

Responsibilities The Governance & Compliance Intern supports the agency's Legislative Affairs Liaison and serves as a support link between South Carolina First Steps leadership and its network of 46 local partnerships. This role modernizes and safeguards the agency’s governance infrastructure by transforming raw data into actionable insights. The intern gains hands‑on experience in public administration, data‑driven decision‑making, and organizational design and engages with state officials, nonprofit leaders, and executive leaders. Designs and implements a centralized governance database to manage board member profiles across the state, tracking tenures, contacts, and service data for continuity and data‑driven decisions. Conducts audits of local partnership boards to ensure compliance with Act 81 legislative requirements, developing a monitoring system to track board composition and identify potential gaps. Collaborates with leadership to develop a standardized filing system for state and federal records, improving operational efficiency and audit readiness. Assists in professionalizing communication channels for executive and delegation board appointments, refining coordination tools with state officials and partners. Performs other duties as assigned by the Agency Director, Legislative Affairs Liaison, and Chief Partnership Officer. Qualifications High school diploma and current enrollment in an accredited university or college with a major related to public administration, pre‑law, public policy, political science, business administration, communications, or public relations. Excellent customer service skills. Proficiency in Excel and Word. Ability to draft clear, professional guidance. Ability to read and interpret official documents, policies, and legislative acts. Knowledge of standard office procedures and professional etiquette in government settings. Ability to manage sensitive information accurately.
