Undergraduate Programs Coordinator & Advisor (BLANK AST 4)

Under general supervision, responsible for providing undergraduate program administration and academic advising in the College of Letters and Science's Yellow Cluster Undergraduate Advising Unit for Psychology, Philosophy, Cognitive Science, and Science and Technology Studies.

Oversee mandatory advising. Interpret, develop, and implement policies. Work with cluster leadership on program development and administration. Analyze enrollment trends and assist with curricular planning. Manage quality assessment. Administer undergraduate activities. Provide administrative support.

Provide comprehensive, advanced academic advising on a wide range of complex issues to a diverse population of undergraduate students in the departmental majors. Certify completion of major and minor degrees. Evaluate transfer student applications. Maintain student and instructional databases.

Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in holistic advising and counseling approaches and experience with academic policies, procedures, and requirements in an education setting; recommending solutions to progression and requirement issues; skills to make proper referrals to other campus resources.
• Experience in curriculum planning processes and best practices; knowledge of undergraduate courses and degree requirements.
• Organizational and administrative skills to develop and implement new programs and/or material to better meet the undergraduate advising needs of the cluster.
• Demonstrated interpersonal, communication, and effective listening skills to interact positively and cooperatively with students, family members, faculty, administrators, staff, and the general public in a culturally dynamic University.
• Skill to identify and determine appropriate level of advising or referral services for individual students, providing immediate crisis counseling, and referrals to students in academic, financial, or personal difficulty.
• Knowledge of university, college, major, or general education requirements and their application to specific major programs.

Department Overview

The Yellow Cluster is an academic unit within the College of Letters and Science and serves the departments of Psychology, Philosophy, and Science and Technology Studies, the Cognitive Science Program, and 3 research centers (Center for Mind & Brain, Center for Artificial Intelligence and Experimental Futures, and Center for Science & Innovation Studies).

The Yellow Cluster Advising Center includes six professional staff advisors who report to the Undergraduate Programs Manager, and a team of approximately 10 peer advisors. This position provides comprehensive and wide-ranging academic advising and administrative services to a diverse population. Yellow Cluster majors include Psychology, Philosophy, Science and Technology Studies, and Cognitive Science. Minors include Psychology, Philosophy, Logic, and History & Philosophy of Science, Data in Society, and AI and Society. It is a very large academic unit containing approximately 3,200 total undergraduate students in the four majors.

The units consists of a Department Chair & 2 Vice Chairs (Psychology), Department Chair (Philosophy), Director and Associate Director (CMB), Department Chair (STS), Director of CSIS, Director of Cognitive Science, Director of CAIEF, approximately 70 Senate faculty, 35 Academic Federation faculty, 100+ non-Senate academic employees of varying titles (Graduate Student Researchers, Teaching Assistants, Visiting Scholars, Postdoctoral Scholars, Lecturers), 150+ graduate students, 3200+ undergraduate majors, and 23 staff FTE. Since the Centers draw faculty from different colleges/divisions it requires that this position is conversant and knowledgeable about the many varying units.
