Summary The registered nurse renders highly professional and technical nursing care to assigned patients. The registered nurse provides direct and indirect patient care using the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation). Oversees other assigned team members and collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to provide population specific care in accordance with the BORN regulations and professional standards of care. Specialty Area Additional Requirements Adult GI: 2 years Critical Care/GI experience required, unless otherwise noted in job posting. ACLS required within first year of employment, CCGRN certification preferred. Assisted Reproductive Technologies Clinic (ARTC): Dual‑practice support for BWH and MGH fertility practices. Must have BSN, complete the ASRM RN certificate course within first year, and have minimum 1 year experience in reproductive endocrinology. Cancer Center: Minimum one year experience administering single‑agent and multi‑drug outpatient chemotherapy. Thorough assessment skills, Hematology/Oncology disease knowledge, and experience with acute and chronic side effects required. OCN certification required within first year; Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Administration Certification Card required. Cardiovascular Center: 2 years Critical Care experience, preferred Cardiac ICU/CCU/Cardiac Surgery or Cath Lab experience, interventional radiology/electrophysiology experience required. BLS/ACLS certification required upon employment. Device Clinic: 2 years device clinic experience with pacemaker programming and clinic follow‑up. BCLS and ACLS certifications required. HRS/NASP certification preferred. ED: 2 years ED experience required. ACLS, PALS, and CPI certifications required within first year. CEN or CCRN preferred. ICU: 2 years Critical Care experience required. ACLS required within first year. Labor & Delivery/AETU: 2 years L&D experience required. NRP required within first year. Maternal Fetal Medicine: Minimum two years perinatal experience. BSN required. BLS and ACLS preferred. Med/Surg: 1 year Med/Surg experience required. Telemetry experience preferred; telemetry training within first year. Mother/Baby: 2 years mother/baby experience required. NRP required within first year. OR: 2 years OR experience required. Peri‑operative Nursing Program completion preferred. AORN certification preferred. PACU/Henderson: 2 years Critical Care/PACU experience required. ACLS and PALS required within first year. Pediatrics: 2 years Pediatrics experience required. NRP within first year for mother/baby cross‑training. Pedi GI: 2 years Pedi GI experience required. PALS within first year. Psychiatry: 2 years Psychiatry experience required. CPI within first month. SCN: 2 years SCN experience required. NRP within first year. STAT RN: 2 years Critical Care/Emergency experience required. ACLS, PALS, CPI within first year. Primary Care Triage RN: 2 years Triage/ER/Urgent Care/Outpatient experience required. ANCC RN‑BC preferred. Assesses the patient’s physical, psychological, spiritual, cultural, and social needs. Provides competent and compassionate care tailored to individual needs. Individualizes care considering factors such as age, developmental or physical abilities, spiritual or cultural practices, economic status, literacy, communication skills, cognitive abilities, and gender or sexual orientation. Updates knowledge and skill of populations served to meet patient care needs. Applies knowledge of illness, injury, disease, and identifies symptoms requiring immediate intervention. Individualizes a plan of care based on assessments in collaboration with the patient/family/attendant and multidisciplinary team. Engages patient/family/attendants as partners in caring. Updates plan of care and documentation with continuing assessments. Implements clinical and technical aspects of care and physician orders in compliance with standards of practice. Evaluates patient/family responses to interventions, revising the plan of care accordingly. Sets priorities when planning and implementing patient care. Coordinates and collaborates with resources and team members for comprehensive discharge planning. Recognizes changes in patient’s status and informs physician or other professional. Collaborates with Case Managers to anticipate discharge needs and address barriers. Identifies the person primarily responsible for home care and includes them in teaching and discharge planning. Creates and maintains a safe and therapeutic environment for patients, self, and coworkers. Uses two patient identifiers correctly. Applies infection control, OSHA, hazardous material, and isolation procedures. Protects patient privacy and confidential information. Provides patient comfort and hygiene. Uses equipment and supplies according to procedures. Assesses need before restraints; uses alternatives when appropriate. Performs point‑of‑care testing with proper technique and calibration. Ensures equipment is operational and safe. Responds appropriately to emergencies. Reduces injury risk through fall precautions, call bell, rails, and other safety practices. Treats patients and families respectfully. Advocates for the patient. Informs patient of rights and responsibilities. Provides emotional, psychological, and spiritual support. Ensures quality through performance improvement participation. Incorporates improvement recommendations into practice. Controls patient care cost via efficient supply management. Suggests new cost containment approaches. Evaluates outcomes and recommends plan revisions. Ensures accurate and timely documentation and communication of patient information. Completes all parts of documentation consistently. Documents patient progress chronologically. Provides safe, accurate, and timely medication and IV administration. Uses the “5 rights” for medication administration. Scans barcodes where applicable. Demonstrates drug action knowledge and appropriate nursing interventions. Verifies medication records per protocols. Assesses drug dosing and infusion settings for high‑volume or special therapies. Reports medication variances and problems. Verifies infusion pump rates. Coordinates educational plans with multidisciplinary team. Assesses educational needs. Implement educational plans considering barriers and cultural needs. Documents educational outcomes. Evaluates teaching outcomes and adjusts instruction. Takes responsibility for personal performance and professional growth. Initiates changes to improve unit nursing quality. Accepts accountability for patient care. Works well with coworkers and team members. Accepts constructive criticism. Maintains clinical competence and regulatory requirements. Performs charge nurse duties when needed. Acts as a professional role model and resource. Supports new staff orientation. Advocates for patient concerns up the chain of command. Manages urgent and emergent situations. Communicates effectively and resolves conflict. Provides clear expectations to team members. Solves problems efficiently. Ensures critical patient information is communicated. Supports management decisions and initiatives. Device Clinic RN Role Specific Responsibilities Enrolls, interrogates, and programs outpatient pacemaker patients. Recognizes abnormalities, malfunctions, and end‑of‑service indicators; notifies cardiologist and schedules follow‑up or replacement. Prioritizes and coordinates with the healthcare team for timely care. Educates patients and families on device function and clinic routine. Forwarded information to referring physicians. Ensures timely and proper documentation and billing. Leads device recall team. Administers all administrative duties for trans‑telephonic monitoring, including purchase orders and billing. Oversees Cardiac Arrhythmia Service event monitoring. Provides cross‑coverage as necessary. Serves as resource to staff, other departments, and administration; offers input and recommendations to maintain budgetary goals. Maintains knowledge of hospital, department, and regulatory policies. Participates in continuing education. STAT RN Role Specific Responsibilities Assists with rapid responses and Code Blues on inpatient units. Assists with admissions/transfers of critically ill patients to ICU from ED, OR, PACU, or other units. Assists care of unstable ICU‑level patients in ED, PACU, and medical surgical units. Assists with IV access and phlebotomy as needed. Assists ICU staff when acuity exceeds core staffing and additional recruitment fails. Assists transport and supervision of patients requiring diagnostics off‑unit. Performs all other clinical duties when no critical‑care needs exist. Works under supervision of the Nursing Administrator and overall direction of the ICU nurse manager. Education Other Certificate/Diploma Nursing required; Bachelor’s Degree Nursing preferred. Licenses and Credentials Registered Nurse [RN – State License] – Generic – HR Only required. Experience Demonstrated clinical competence and experience as required by specific posting or specialty area. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Uses the nursing process and evidence‑based practice throughout care episodes. Creates and maintains a safe and therapeutic environment for patients, self, and coworkers. Assures quality through participation in performance improvement. Ensures accurate and timely written communication of patient information. Provides safe and timely medication and IV administration. Familiar with exposure to human waste, cleaning, and potentially combative patients.
