Emergency Medical Technician

Position Summary: Under the general direction of the Chief of Operations and Operations Supervisor’s, the EMT has responsibility for the safe operation of all LHRS vehicles in accord with Pennsylvania motor code and the delivery of optimum patient care in accord with the EMS Act of 1985 (Act 45) and all regional guideline’s/protocols. Reports to: Chief of Operations and Operation’s Supervisor’s Education:High School Graduate or equivalent (GED)Successful completion of the State of Pennsylvania EMT Training ProgramExperience:Minimum of one (1) year continuous and verifiable EMT experience with an emergency response ambulance service.Licensure/Certification:Certification by the State of Pennsylvania as an EMTValid motor vehicle operators licenseCPR health care provider certification meeting ARC or AHA StandardsSuccessful completion of PHTLS and/or BTLS courseEVOC – Emergency Vehicle Operations CourseSuccessful Completion or a Hazardous Materials R& I classCompetencies:Verbally communicate in person and via telephone and telecommunications using the English LanguageHear spoken information from co-workers, patient’s, physicians, dispatchers and sounds common to the emergency scene.Lift, carry and balance a minimum or 125 pounds equally distributed (250) pounds with assistance, a height of 22 inches and a distance of 10 feet.Read and comprehend written materials under stressful conditions.Verbally interview patient, family members and bystanders and hear their responses.Document physically, in writing, all relevant information In prescribed formal.Demonstrate manual dexterity and line motor skills, with ability to perform all tasks related to quality patient care.Bend, stoop, crawl and walk on uneven surfaces.Meet minimum vision requirements to operate a motor vehicle within the state of Pennsylvania.Function in varied environmental conditions such as lighted or darkened work area, extreme heat, cold, and moisture.Interpret written, oral and diagnostic forms or instructionPerform in situations that create stress and tension on a regular basis.Other Requirements:Must have thorough current knowledge of medical/traumatic assessment, treatment and protocols. Be capable of performing all EMT basic skills and using BLS equipment.Be able to perform in accordance with all behavioral objectives of the BLS curriculum approved by the Department of health and other objectives identified by the Department.Must follow the rules and regulations of the LHRS employee manualUnderstands that consumption or alcohol beverages or use of illegal substances while working or under the influence of such while working will result in immediate suspension of duties and possible termination pending the results of an investigation.Agrees to allowing blood/urine to be drawn and tested to prove or disprove the use of illegal substances or alcohol if there if reasonable and documented suspicion of such.Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with fellow employees, hospital staff, BLS units, fire and rescue units, police departments, communication centers, management. QRS Services, neighboring ALS units and the general public.Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.Must be able to teach, supervise, and direct the work of students, EMT’s and BLS crews.Must be able to handle conflict situations with good judgment, professionalism and courtesy.Receives call from PSAP, verbally acknowledges the call, reads road maps, identifies the most expeditious route to the scene and observes traffic ordinances and regulations.Upon arrival at the scene, insures that the vehicle is parked in a safe location; performs size-up to determine scene safety, mechanism of injury or illness, determines total number of patient’s performs triage, and requests additional help is necessary.In the absence of public safety personnel. creates a safe environment for the protection of the injured and those assisting in the care of the patient’sUsing body substance isolation techniques protects the patients) and providers from possible contamination.Avoids mishandling patients.Reports verbally and in writing, observations and emergency care given to the patient at the scene and in transit, to the receiving staff for record keeping and diagnostic purposes. Upon requires, provides assistance to the receiving facility staff.After call, restocks and replaces patient care supplies, cleans all equipment following appropriate decontamination/cleaning procedures, makes careful check of all equipment to insure availability of ambulance for next run. Maintains ambulance in efficient operating condition.Maintains patient confidentiality at all times. Included but not limited to the acquisition of patient history, medical history, reponing of patient condition over the radio, telephone, in person or hospital/institution transfer of medical care. Patient confidentiality and protection or personal information will be maintained via trip report writing, obtaining insurance information, billing practices and disposition of report.Attends continuing education and refresher training programs as required by Lake Harmony Rescue Squad medical direction and/or certifying agency.Duties and ResponsibilitiesClinical:Serves as an EMT in the Basic Life Support Unit performing procedures as outlined in the EMS Act of 1985 (Act 45 and regional protocols).Participates actively in QA activities of the BLS unitMaintains personal knowledge and skills in order to deliver optimum patient care as an EMT and role model tar other emergency services personnel.Safely operates vehicles of LHRS in accordance with the current motor vehicle code of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.Supervises the performance of EMT trainees and other observers on the BLS units.Works with rescue personnel and assists when needed. Works in potentially hazardous environments to insure safety and stabilization of the patient’s.Works with local tire and law enforcement agencies as a team for coordinated effort on the patient behalf.Educational:Provides for ongoing personal growth in BLS emergency care through education and maintenance of state continuing education requirements for EMT certifications.Submits proof of completion of necessary certifications to LHRS.Maintains awareness of regional BLS protocolDocuments all activities in an acceptable mannerPublic Relations:Participates actively in public awareness and community education programs related to LHRS.Maintains professional appearance of the approved uniform and maintains hygienic and grooming standards.Works on special projects as delegated by the Chief of Operations of Operations Supervisors.Analytical Skills:Must be able to collect and record data far use in the field and for medical records.Must participate in local and regional data collection and quality assurance programs of the Eastern PA EMS Region and LHRS.Control Skills:Maintains crew vehicle, radios, equipment, medications. supplies and quarters in state or readiness twenty four hours a day, seven days a week.When approved by the Medical Director, participates in the training and evaluation of student EMT’s.Must be able to be in command or lesser trained people when on calls.Communication Skills:Needs to communicate tactfully and sensitively to the volunteers or LHRS programs.Shall remain apolitical while representing LHRS.Physical Effort:Considerable lifting and moving of heavy patients and objects required.Will need to extricate some patient’s in a potentially hazardous environment.Work will present considerable hazards, i.e explosions, anoxic environments, violent patients, and potential fire risks of which entry will be with only proper training and protective equipment when available.
