Mechanic Shop AssistantThe Shop Assistant supports the transportation department by assisting mechanics, driving school buses as needed, and maintaining the facility and grounds. This role requires flexibility, effective communication, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. The Shop Assistant must adhere to all safety and school board policies, contributing to the smooth operation of transportation services for the school district.Reports To: Director of TransportationClassification: Full-Time (Classified)FLSA Status: Non-ExemptWork Term: 240 DaysCompensation: MCBOE Salary ScheduleQualifications:High School Diploma or GEDClass B CDL License with P and S endorsements (or willing to obtain)Fingerprint clearance with the Alabama State Department of Education prior to the start dateEssential Duties and Responsibilities:Assist with routine maintenance and repairs on school buses and other vehiclesPerform minor repairs under the supervision of a certified mechanicOperate school buses on scheduled routes or for special events and field trips as neededSweep, mop, and clean the shop area and office spacesDispose of waste materials in accordance with safety regulationsCommunicate effectively with supervisors regarding job assignments and progressReport any safety hazards or maintenance needs to supervisorsRespond to emergency breakdowns or other unexpected issuesFollow Macon County Board of Education policies and proceduresAdhere to all safety regulations and protocols.Maintain accurate records of work performed.Attend training sessions and staff meetings as required.Other Duties as Assigned:Participate in inventory management, including ordering and stocking parts.Assist in the preparation of vehicles for inspections.Provide support during transportation department events and activities.Perform additional tasks to support the overall function of the transportation department.Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Technology and/or Superintendent.Required Skills and Competencies:Ability to follow both oral and written directions and instructions.
