The Intermediate Care Unit (IMC), also known as the Progressive Care Unit (PCU), at The George Washington University Hospital bridges the gap between ICU and general medical-surgical care. The IMC/PCU provides specialized monitoring and treatment for patients who require higher acuity care, including continuous cardiac monitoring, complex medication management, and frequent assessments. Nurses in this unit develop strong assessment skills, critical thinking, and early-intervention expertise while working in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.

Are you a skilled and compassionate registered nurse seeking an opportunity in an intermediate or progressive care environment? The George Washington University Hospital is seeking IMC/PCU RNs to provide high-quality, patient-centered care to moderately complex patients requiring enhanced monitoring and clinical expertise. This role is ideal for nurses who enjoy critical thinking, early intervention, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities include:

• Providing evidence-based nursing care to IMC/PCU patients with complex medical and surgical conditions.
• Performing continuous cardiac and physiologic monitoring, recognizing early signs of deterioration, and intervening appropriately.
• Administering and titrating select IV medications and therapies in accordance with unit protocols.
• Partnering with physicians, advanced practice providers, ICU teams, and ancillary services to ensure seamless patient care and safe transitions.
• Applying strong assessment and decision-making skills to manage changes in patient condition and escalate care when needed.
• Supporting patients and families through education, communication, and compassionate care.
• Maintaining accurate and timely documentation of assessments, interventions, and patient responses.
• Providing patient and family education related to diagnoses, treatment plans, and recovery goals.
• Participating in quality improvement initiatives and upholding patient safety standards within the IMC/PCU.

Qualifications include:

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required or currently enrolled.
• Current Washington, D.C. Registered Nurse (RN) license or eligibility.
• Prior acute care, telemetry, step-down, or critical care experience preferred.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) preferred (or required within a defined timeframe).
• Strong assessment, communication, and teamwork skills.
