Staff Scientist - Human Nutrition and Obesity Division: Pediatrics | Work Arrangement: Onsite only | Location: Houston, TX | Salary: $70,000 - $80,000 | FLSA Status: Exempt | Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Summary The Biostatistics and Research Data Lab at USDA/ARS Children’s Nutrition Research Center is seeking a full‑time Staff Scientist to serve as a scientific leader. The Lab’s mission is to support high‑quality research by providing expertise in study design, statistical methodology, data management, analytic strategy, grant development, and training. The Staff Scientist will shape and advance the scientific agenda of the Lab and its collaborators, develop and lead independent research projects, contribute to grant submissions, and create innovative methods for analyzing complex human behavioral data (e.g., physical activity, gaze detection, dietary assessment). The candidate will also guide Center‑wide efforts to strengthen scientific rigor, reproducibility, and best practices. Job Duties Design statistically rigorous research protocols, IRB submissions, and grant proposals to various funding agencies. Work independently and with others to design, analyze, and interpret complex datasets using advanced statistical tools, including GLMs, hierarchical modeling, latent factor modeling, multilevel structural equation modeling, time series analyses, and AI/ML methods. Create research and evaluation studies to promote proper statistical methodology and correct inference, refine existing approaches, and develop innovative methods. Conduct literature searches and critical reviews for peer‑reviewed publications. Summarize literature and scientific evidence needed for publications, technical reports, and conference abstracts. Submit scientific meeting abstracts and attend conferences to present research results. Participate in interdisciplinary project teams to provide technical and conceptual statistical support. Perform other job‑related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Doctoral Degree (PhD); experience may not substitute for degree. Three years of post‑doctoral research experience. Preferred Qualifications PhD in behavioral sciences, public health, social sciences, exercise physiology, or related field. Experience working with complex human behavior data.
