Position Certified Teacher II. Function The Classroom Teacher creates a nurturing learning environment to facilitate the personal, social and intellectual development of students. The teacher works closely with other staff and district administration to respond to the individual needs and abilities of students. III. Reports To Principal/Building Administrator IV. Minimum Qualifications Current RI Teaching Certificate in relevant content area V. Summary of Essential Functions Facilitate the personal, social and intellectual development of students. Establish a nurturing learning environment and respond to the individual needs of students. Implement useful assessment measures. Select and use effective instructional methods and learning materials. Establish a cooperative relationship with all assigned students. Maintain open lines of communication with parents/guardians. Engage in professional growth activities through an ongoing program of job-related knowledge and skill development. Work collaboratively to achieve the overall philosophy and mission of the District. Adhere to a strict policy of complete confidentiality for all student information. VI. Performance and Responsibilities In accordance with the Rhode Island Professional Teaching Standards and the Rhode Island Code of Professional Responsibility. VII. Standards of Practice and Expectations of Certified Teaching Personnel Expectation of Contribution to Overall Operation of the Building Assume some responsibility for correcting pupils’ misbehavior outside the classroom. Coordinate and participate in school-wide projects such as RIF, assembly programs, and school clean-up programs. Be present in classrooms at key times when students enter and re-enter, and escort students at building entrances. Cover classes according to contractual guidelines. Remain at doors during student passing time to supervise. Distribute various school-related communications. Ensure the classroom is left in proper and secure order at the end of the school day. Clean up after themselves in the faculty room. Perform recess and lunch duties. Expected Professional Competencies Keep abreast of new curriculum trends and be involved in professional organizations. Stress positivism and enthusiasm, maintaining a classroom atmosphere conducive to positive learning experiences. Attempt to meet individual needs of all children with an empathetic/supportive attitude toward special education students. Have goals and objectives for the course taught. Provide basic counseling assistance to students in need of direction and help them with personal and educational problems. Expected Routine Classroom Duties and Responsibilities Maintain a substitute folder including updated daily lesson plans, class seating plans, teacher’s schedule, attendance routine, lunch procedures, fire drill procedures, reading and math groups, health information, dependable student list, students needing more supervision, emergency copies, and other details helpful to a substitute teacher. Be alert to students’ health needs and signs of eyestrain, hearing loss, child abuse, improper seating, etc. Maintain proper discipline, handle routine discipline, and implement realistic problem-solving techniques. Never leave the classroom with students unattended unless supervision is arranged. Correct all work and worksheets assigned to students. Concern general welfare of students. Participate in the grade reporting system, maintain a good system of student evaluation, and keep a sufficient number of scores in each subject. Expected Parent and Community Relations Strive for better public relations with parent groups and community movements. Show interest in attending school-related functions, in-service meetings, curriculum study meetings, and district-wide curriculum committees. Respond within a reasonable time frame to parental requests. Maintenance of Expected Internal Relationships Keep lines of communication open between teachers, parents, students, and principal. Dress in a manner that provides an example of neatness and good grooming. Collaborate with specialists to provide programs for mainstreamed students and work cooperatively with PPS and agency personnel. Notify parents if their child is kept after school for misbehaving. Collect various returns; e.g., insurance return, picture return, PTA membership forms. Distribute various school-related communications. Call designated source early to advise of necessity to be absent. Sign out when necessary to leave the building during working hours. Check mailboxes and email daily. Comply with all established policies and procedures. Attend monthly faculty, common planning time, professional development, and other meetings as outlined in the contract. Other essential tasks for safety, well-being, and efficient operation of the educational program. Strives to implement by instruction and action the district’s philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives. VII. Terms of Employment As per the Agreement between the Cranston School Committee and the Cranston Teachers’ Alliance. Position Type: Full-Time Job Requirements At least 2 years of relevant experience preferred. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Citizenship, residency, or work visa required.
