Job Summary:

The Adolescent Health Technician (AHT) role has a responsibility of supporting the daily operations of the high school health suite. This position is under the clinical supervision of the Supervisory Medical Officer and Supervisory Nurse Coordinator. This position is under the task of the licensed clinical staff. The Adolescent Health Technician will also assist in patient's wellbeing, maintaining heath care environment patient flow, and managing the collection of specimens for the diagnosis and treatment of acute medical conditions, chronic medical conditions, and infectious diseases.


The incumbent for this position will work with other licensed health professionals for patient care coordination, assist families and school officials to ensure patient care coordination. This role is responsible for managing patient triage, coordinating critical screening activities, and maintaining health records needed to support strategic clinical decision-making. The Health Technician applies strong clinical judgment and exceptional attention to detail. This position prioritizes patient privacy and confidentiality while building and maintaining relationships.

The Health Technician contributes to operational and community efficiency by leveraging evidence-based health education, promoting safety and infection prevention protocols, and consistently demonstrating the reliability and professionalism essential to effective public health operations.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Provides customer service and manages important administrative and operational tasks such as checking patients in, scheduling, room turnover, and maintaining patient flow throughout the health suite/clinic in alignment with DC Health and school health policies and clinical protocols. Serves as the initial point of contact for patients visiting the health suite/ clinic while maintaining privacy and confidentiality. Performs assigned treatments and procedures as delegated under the direction of licensed professional staff. Collects, processes, and correctly disposes of blood, urine, and other samples for routine and urgent concerns (e.g. collects urine sample for sexually transmitted infection screening, draws and processes blood for rapid and send out infectious disease and medication monitoring testing). Knowledge of handling and disposal of infectious material is required.

Collaborates with school personnel and external partners to address student health needs and promote wellness in the school community. Adheres to infection prevention protocols and standard safety practices. Participates in ongoing professional development related to emergency preparedness, health promotion, adolescent health, teen communication standards, school health best practices, sexual and reproductive health, drug use, and mental health. Conducts health screenings (e.g. mental health, vision, hearing, height, weight).


Qualifications and Education:

Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression.


Preferred Experience:

Completion of one of the following:

• Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) credential
• Two years of nursing school
• Other equivalent education such as Emergency Medical Technician credentialing

Two years of clinical or laboratory experience, active Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, and demonstrated proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) systems are strongly preferred.

Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements:

Must possess CPR/AED certification and complete continuing education requirements as

mandated by DOH or federal grants.

Working Conditions and Environment:

The work is performed in a school health suite within a public or charter school setting. There is potential exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, and other medical hazards. The environment can be fast-paced, busy, and unpredictable, requiring strict adherence to infection control and safety protocols, as well as the ability to respond effectively to unexpected medical events.
