Veterinarian / Medical Director
SPCA East Texas
The SPCA of East Texas (SPCA – ET), a community animal rescue non-profit in East Texas and the in-house SNIPPET Clinic, is seeking a dedicated full-time licensed veterinarian to join our team and serve as the medical director. The veterinarian/medical director will provide medical and surgical care to the SPCA program animals (canine and feline), spay/neuter in a high – volume public, and wellness clinics (primarily vaccinations and prevention) open to the public. This position is supported by an experienced team of highly qualified veterinary technicians in both wellness services and surgery. Minimal Interactions with the public (pet owners). Medical Director Essential Duties and Responsibilities Establish and refine medical protocols, driving continuous improvement in the quality of care. Stay up to date with new medical information and changes in veterinary medicine and attend Continuing Education meetings. Collaborate in Clinic recruitment and staff development, nurturing a culture of learning and advancement. Assists in the hiring of any additional approved Veterinarians to ensure they provide quality and safe care to the SPCA of ET program animals and the public animals. Oversee part-time, full-time and contract vet professionals when they are utilized in the Clinic. Oversee the educational needs of any part-time relief/contract veterinarians to ensure care is provided in a safe manner. Assist in the development of the veterinary team to ensure the delivery of the highest quality care and exceptional client service. Works collaboratively with the clinic director and the SPCA – ET Executive Director in shelter and public clinic operations. Provide direction, education and support to staff veterinarians that are providing care to the SPCA ET program animals and the public. Develop and manage preventative shelter medicine and disease protocols. Follows SPCA euthanasia policy and advises and performs euthanasia only when medically appropriate for SPCA program animals. Maintain DEA licensure of self and employed/contracted Veterinary professionals. Follow all regulations set forth by the DEA. Manage records of controlled substances for self and oversight of any relief/contract veterinarians. Ensure appropriate medication is administered by veterinary technical staff as directed. Oversight of controlled substance practices to ensure diversion does not occur. Veterinarian Essential Duties and Responsibilities SPCA of EAST TEXAS PROGRAM ANIMALS Perform high-volume spay and neuter surgeries for the SPCA – ET’s cats and dogs in their program. Provide veterinary care, including medical examinations, diagnostics, care, monitoring, and treatment. Provide wellness services including vaccinations and prevention. Issue USDA Health certificates for SPCA- ET program animals that are designated to go on transport to the other rescues in the United States. Perform approved medical and surgical procedures for the SPCA of ET program pets in a way that will deliver the highest quality of care while minimizing patient stress and discomfort. Examples may include dentals, amputations, enucleations, mass removal, if skilled in that area of need. PUBLIC / COMMUNITY Wellness Clinics Wellness Clinic for the public are scheduled 4 days a month. Perform high volume physical examinations and provide wellness services such as vaccinations, preventative care, and Lab work. Records information pertaining to animal examinations in a timely and accurate manner. Spay & Neuter Clinics Perform high-volume Spay and Neuter surgeries for our scheduled community canine and feline pets. QUALIFICATIONS Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an accredited university Licensure in good standing to practice in the state of Texas. Current license or ability to obtain DEA license. A commitment to practicing the highest standard of medicine, upholding the veterinary code of ethics. Professional demeanor and appearance, with excellent interpersonal skills and a positive, friendly attitude The ability to make decisions and communicate clearly and effectively with fellow team members. Proficiency in high volume Spay and Neuter surgery is a plus, but supplemental education may be provided. Maintenance of Professional Liability Insurance Desire to learn and adopt shelter medicine and high-volume spay and neuter practices. Maintain client/patient medical records and make certain all necessary logs are kept up to date through established protocols.
