Job Description : Library Information Specialist Department: School Principal Last Revised: April 2026 Job Summary To develop, lead, and manage a comprehensive school library program that supports student achievement, promotes literacy, and equips students and staff with the skills to locate, evaluate, and use information effectively. The Library Information Specialist serves as an instructional partner, information specialist, and program administrator aligned with Tennessee academic standards and district priorities. Main Duties and Responsibilities The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. - Collaborate with teachers to design and deliver instruction that integrates research skills, information literacy, and digital citizenship.
- Teach students to access, evaluate, and use print and digital information effectively and ethically.
- Support inquiry-based, project-based, and cross-curricular learning experiences.
- Model effective use of instructional technology and digital resources.
- Assist students and staff in locating and utilizing a variety of reference and research tools.
- Develop and maintain an organized, accessible, and student-centered library program.
- Select, acquire, catalog, and manage a diverse collection of print and digital resources aligned with curriculum needs.
- Oversee circulation, inventory, and organization of library materials.
- Maintain library systems and ensure efficient access to resources.
- Create engaging displays and promote effective use of library facilities and services.
- Promote a culture of reading and lifelong learning.
- Assist students in selecting appropriate materials based on interests and reading levels.
- Support school-wide literacy initiatives and goals.
- Plan and implement programs and activities that encourage reading and library use.
- Support students and staff in the use of digital tools, databases, and research platforms.
- Promote digital citizenship, media literacy, and responsible technology use.
- Stay current with emerging technologies and integrate them into library services.
- Provide guidance on evaluating digital and print information sources.
- Work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and staff to support instructional goals.
- Plan library-related instructional activities with teachers and students.
- Provide assistance and professional support related to instructional materials and resources.
- Communicate library services, policies, and resources to stakeholders.
- Maintain records, reports, and documentation related to library operations.
- Ensure compliance with district policies and Tennessee Department of Education guidelines.
- Manage library procedures, policies, and daily operations effectively.
- Promote appropriate student behavior and responsible use of library resources.
- Performs such other duties as may reasonably be prescribed by the principal.
Minimum Education and Experience
- Master's Degree in Library Information Science
- Experience in library services, education, or related field preferred.
- Valid and active Tennessee teacher license with an endorsement in Library Media Specialist.
- Understanding of student learning needs, literacy development, and research skills.
- Knowledge of Tennessee Academic Standards and integration of information literacy.
- Awareness of digital literacy, media literacy, and college/career readiness skills.
- Ability to design and deliver engaging, standards-aligned instruction.
- Skill in supporting research, inquiry, and cross-curricular learning.
- Knowledge of best practices in literacy and information fluency.
- Proficiency with library management systems, databases, and instructional technology tools.
- Ability to support and guide technology integration for staff and students.
- Understanding of digital citizenship and online safety.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with students, staff, and stakeholders.
- Ability to provide guidance and support in a collaborative environment.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to manage resources, materials, and systems efficiently.
- Attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records.
- The essential functions of this position must be performed on-site at the assigned work location. This role is not designated as a remote or hybrid position.
- Physical presence at work is an essential function of this position. This job may require lifting of objects that exceed 25 lbs. Other physical demands that may be required are as follows:

- Ability to understand instructions and underlying principles; reason and make judgments; understand meanings of words and the ideas associated with them; perform arithmetic operations quickly and accurately; move the hands easily and manipulate small objects with the fingers; make visual comparisons and discriminations and see slight differences in shapes and shadings of figures; perceive or recognize similarities or differences in colors or shades or other values of the same color.
- Low to medium degree of discomfort due to exposure to temperature, fumes, dirt, dust, noise, and cleaning chemicals.
- This role works in a dynamic and engaging library environment designed to foster student learning, growth, and development. The library will be organized to support a range of instructional activities, with appropriate resources and materials available for hands-on learning.
- This position manages a diverse group of students, guiding them through the academic curriculum while maintaining a positive and structured classroom atmosphere. The role involves adapting instructional methods to accommodate various learning styles and abilities, ensuring that each student has the opportunity to succeed. The teacher will maintain effective classroom management practices to create a respectful and collaborative environment that promotes student engagement and achievement.
- The position also requires effective communication with parents and colleagues to support the holistic development of students and ensure alignment with school goals. Collaboration with other staff members and participation in school-wide initiatives will be essential to ensure a cohesive educational experience for all students.
- Regular assessment of student progress and the implementation of individualized support plans will be key components of the teacher's responsibilities. The teacher will be responsible for creating a safe, inclusive, and nurturing learning space that encourages exploration and academic curiosity.
