DevOps Engineer

The DevOps Engineer role within the NC Department of Administration IT team is a hybrid position responsible for integrating application development, SQL Server database administration, server and platform operations, Azure cloud services, and system maintenance. This role supports enterprise servers, manages cloud and on-premise environments, and ensures application reliability and security across multiple agency divisions. Responsibilities:

• Administer approximately 15 enterprise servers across application, database, web, and file/print functions.
• Manage Azure-hosted Development/QA environments and DIT-hosted Production, Test, and Training environments.
• Support externally hosted application servers for the Mail Service Center.
• Oversee certificate management, service accounts, and security configurations for all supported servers.
• Support Windows server refresh projects and platform migrations such as Windows Server 2016 to 2019.
• Administer multiple SQL Server databases across Azure and DIT hosting environments.
• Maintain databases integral to agency applications including Mail Service Center, Motor Fleet, Non-Public Education, State Clearinghouse, and State Construction Office.
• Support databases used by external vendors for Mail Service Center and State Parking.
• Serve as Azure DevOps administrator managing iterations, sprints, pipelines, and work items.
• Design, develop, and maintain application components and ASP.NET web applications supporting multiple divisions.
• Support secure coding practices, deployment processes, and application reliability in cloud and on-premise environments.
• Collaborate directly with non-IT agency staff to meet operational needs.

• 3-5 years of experience with Windows Server administration.
• 3-5 years of SQL Server database administration experience.
• Strong knowledge of Windows Server environments, migrations, certificates, service accounts, and multi-tier architectures.
• Ability to manage complex environments across Development, QA, Test, Train, and Production.
• Willingness to work directly with non-IT agency staff.

• Proficiency with Azure DevOps including pipelines, iterations, boards, and work items.

• Hybrid work arrangement requiring onsite presence two days per week initially, increasing to three days per week.
• Must comply with absence approval policies and maintain contactability during absences.
• Candidate must be available for the full contract duration from September 21, 2026 to March 14, 2027.
• Subcontracting and outsourcing restrictions apply and must be disclosed.

• Hybrid schedule with onsite work initially two days per week, eventually increasing to three days per week.
