PAY RANGE - $34.55 - $49.25/hr- plus a comprehensive benefits package

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Responsible for planning, installation, configuration, operation, and maintenance of server hardware, software, storage, and related infrastructure; performs directly related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The principal function of an employee in this class is to ensure professional principles are applied in the support of server infrastructure. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of the Computer and Networking Infrastructure Manager and Information Systems Director but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with other City employees, outside contractors and the public. The principal duties of this class are performed in a general office environment.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL WORK:

• Plans, organizes, and provides technical support for server and storage systems in various City departments;
• Establishes methods and criteria for the evaluation, selection, installation, and configuration of server operating systems and related equipment;
• Designs, implements, monitors, and manages virtualization, shared storage infrastructure, and SQL servers to ensure uninterrupted uptime;
• Develops standards and procedures for the selection and use of desktop and network management software;
• Develops policies regarding capability, security, and disaster recovery relative to server operating systems, storage, and hardware;
• Installs, configures, and maintains storage area networks and server operating systems;
• Installs, monitors, and maintains servers and applications in a highly available environment to allow efficient and safe workflows for other departments;
• Reviews and approves operating system and application service packs and security updates on servers and workstations to keep systems running efficiently and securely;
• Monitors operating system software, peripherals, and storage systems;
• Designs, implements, monitors, and maintains backup and DR solutions for on-premise server/storage infrastructure and cloud servers to allow recovery in the event of an outage or disaster;
• Designs, implements, monitors, and maintains cyber security infrastructure and tools to adhere to best practices; reviews system policies and profiles to ensure systems are configured for effective system protection;
• Designs, implements, monitors, and maintain end-user environment using cloud solutions to maximize efficient workflows of departments;
• Creates batch administration scripts and runs system back-ups;
• Determines workstation build standardization and best practices to ensure efficient workflow and secure devices; builds and deploys workstations and transitions users from old devices to new ones;
• Performs troubleshooting and problem resolution on server operating systems and hardware;
• Reviews and analyzes new application deployments to ensure server performance targets are met;
• Develops technical specifications for proposals and bids, including assisting in the evaluation process;
• Provides technical and operational training and support, including writing technical and operational documentation;
• Provides technical advice in evaluating trends in City server operations and makes projections and formulates plans based on those trends;
• Provides technical advice in evaluating trends in storage area network operations and makes projections and formulates plans based on those trends;
• Acts as subject matter expert for all server, storage, and virtualization areas, answering questions, providing recommendations, and assisting team members;
• Provides guidance and demonstrations to new employees in similar positions;
• Keeps supervisors informed of work progress, issues, and potential solutions;
• Attends meetings and training to stay current on relevant practices and developments;
• Responds to citizen inquiries courteously and promptly;
• Coordinates regularly with others to enhance interdepartmental efficiency; and
• Performs additional duties as required by the classification.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Comprehensive knowledge of all facets of Windows server systems, including procurement of equipment, installation, maintenance, and administration;
• Comprehensive knowledge of virtualization software, including deployment, maintenance, and administration;
• Thorough knowledge of storage area networks, including deployment, maintenance, and administration;
• Thorough knowledge of diagnostic programs utilized in system maintenance and problem resolution activities for server operating systems;
• Thorough knowledge of office terminology, procedures, and equipment;
• Substantial knowledge of assigned department functions, procedures, policies, and organization as they relate to computer support services;
• Ability to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks;
• Ability to understand system user problems and needs;
• Ability to configure server operating systems to enhance user productivity;
• Ability to perform effective network user support;
• Ability to diagnose and correct server operation and storage systems problems;
• Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language;
• Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions;
• Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations;
• Ability to operate or quickly learn to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks;

• Substantial knowledge of computer systems and procedures, as it relates to network operating systems, including operating systems and application software currently used by assigned departments;

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

• Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science; and
• Six or more years of experience in server operating systems and virtualization technology; or
• Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.
