Registered Nurse

US Department of Veterans Affairs

Summary The Staff Registered Nurse with Primary Care uses the nursing process and evidence-based practice to collaborate with Veterans, Providers, Clerical/Clinical Associates, Family/Caregivers, and other providers in developing patient-driven care plans. The RN collaborates with services internal and external to the VA to facilitate care transition and effectively meet patient needs. Qualifications English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in basic written and spoken English based on 38 U.S.C. 7403(f). Education: Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by an accrediting agency, accredited by ACEN or CCNE. Graduates of foreign nursing schools must have current full active unrestricted registration and a recognized equivalency evaluation such as ICD. License: State license (full and unrestricted) required. Candidates who meet education requirements but do not possess licensure may be appointed as a Graduate Nurse Technician on a temporary basis while pursuing licensure. Graduate Nurse Technician Exception: Eligible for 120‑day temporary appointment, extendable up to two years. Grade Determinations: Scope, Education, and Dimension criteria outlined for each grade and level (Nurse I‑III). Specific requirements include ADN, BSc, MSN, or Doctoral degrees with corresponding experience levels. Physical Requirements: VA Directive and Handbook 5019 and local Registered Nurse physical standards. Reference: For more information on this qualification standard - please visit Duties Coordinated care focused on patient education, self‑management, and customer satisfaction throughout the continuum of care. Administers medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines. Collaborates with interdisciplinary team members to influence care outcomes. Provides creative approaches to managing complex client care. Manages assigned panel(s), utilizes registries, and ensures appropriate evaluation and access to patient panels. Provides health promotion, health education, coaching on wellness, disease prevention, and chronic care management. Collaborates in the development, implementation, evaluation, and revision of policies, procedures, and guidelines. Demonstrates performance and leadership to improve care for the Primary Care Department and facility. Provides feedback to peers for improvement and shares primary care knowledge to support safe, quality nursing care. Fosters a safe and supportive environment conducive to professional development of healthcare professionals. Evaluates outpatient outcomes of evidence‑based decisions and practice changes for primary care patients. Responsible for documented outcomes at the program or service level; outcomes must be broad and complex.
