The goal of this position is to provide students with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean and efficient place in which to learn, play and develop. This position is responsible for housekeeping, building security, maintenance and sanitation of assigned school building, grounds and equipment.

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to execute each requirement satisfactorily. The requirements list below are a representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability needed for the position.

1. Demonstrate aptitude or competence for assignment.
2. Interpersonal and basic communication skills. Must be able to understand and communicate clearly.
3. Basic ability to understand documents, define problems and draw valid conclusions. Basic knowledge of cleaning equipment, supplies, custodial procedures and chemicals handling.
4. Operating knowledge of building maintenance, cleaning supplies and equipment including buffers, carpet cleaning/extraction machines, vacuums, basic hand and power tools, snow blowers and floor scrubbing machines required within two months after hire.
5. Oral and written fluency in second language may be preferred or required based on building assignment.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

1. Keep building and premises, including sidewalks, neat and clean at all times.
2. Clean building including classrooms, locker rooms, rest rooms, offices and hallways by removing trash, vacuuming, mopping, sweeping, dusting, buffing, cleaning carpets, washing windows, scrubbing floors and ceilings.
3. Assure building security by locking/unlocking doors at appropriate times, recognizing and correcting unsafe security conditions or reporting condition to appropriate personnel or authorities.
4. Remove trash, animal droppings and, occasionally, small dead animals from building grounds. Clean gum off sidewalks and graffiti off doors and walls.
5. Assist in shoveling and or salting walks and steps as appropriate.
6. Assist in keeping the grounds free from rubbish.
7. Keep all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.
8. Make such minor building repairs as cable of.
9. Report to the Lead Custodian any damage or needed repair to school property.
10. Move furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the maintenance director.
11. Comply with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish and waste.
12. Keep an inventory of supplies and equipment on hand and requisition when needed.
13. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications / Certificates, Licenses, Registrations, Bonding, and or Testing Required

1. High school diploma OR equivalent AND sufficient experience to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities for the position.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee frequently must squat, stoop or kneel, reach about the head and reach forward. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools and climbs on to ladders. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as cleaning supplies, pails and unloading trucks. Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move up to 100 pounds such as salt and bulk furniture. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables, bleachers, scrubbing machines. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

Work is usually performed inside heated, well-lighted building; however, work is also performed outdoors, such as sweeping walkways, mowing lawns, and shoveling snow; working with machines can be noisy and some tasks, such as cleaning restrooms can be dirty and unpleasant.

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Days / Terms of Employment: 255 Days / Twelve-month position. Salary to be determined by the School Board of Education.
