Job Description The North Adams Public Schools is seekingto fill a maintenance position. This position is for 8 hours per day, 5 days per week. This is a year-round position. Job Goal: To maintain the physical school plant in a condition of operating excellence so that full educational use of it may be made at all times. Supervision: Reports to Director of Facilities. Start date: September 28, 2026. Salary: Commensurate with experience as determined by negotiated salary schedule ranging from $41,137 to $47,470 annually. Performance Responsibilities: Examines school buildings on a regular basis for needed repairs and maintenance. Recommends priorities on repair projects. Replaces worn or defective wiring, switches, faucets, and plumbing fixtures, and repairs fencing, asphalt, concrete, and ceilings. Performs, under supervision, carpentry, painting, plastering, electrical work, plumbing, glazing, tiling, and carpentry. Plows snow, snow blows, shovels, mows, weed trim, maintains equipment. Assists in maintaining grounds and playing fields. Paints game fields, parking lots Makes recommendations of supplies and equipment for purchase. Consults with Director of Facilities regarding the establishment of regular preventative maintenance programs. Performs all duties contained in the Custodian job description. Other related duties as may be assigned by the Director of Facilities. Special Knowledge/Abilities For Position: Able to tolerate heights and confined spaces. Knowledge of equipment operation. Must be able to comprehend and follow verbal and written instruction appropriate to custodial activities. Must possess more than an ordinary degree of skill in the maintenance of school buildings. An applicant must have demonstrable basic knowledge of the following skills: carpentry, painting, plastering, electrical, plumbing, glazing, tiling, carpeting, mathematics, and simple construction techniques. An applicant must also have demonstrated the ability to work in a cooperative and tactful manner with fellow employees, conduct him/herself at all times in an exemplary manner, follow and obey the directions and orders of his/her immediate supervisor, and be able to utilize all his/her working time in a wise and productive manner. An applicant must be available to respond to emergency situations on a twenty-four hour per day basis. Physical Requirements: The position requires the delivery of a full range of custodial services to the public. Several hours a day will be spent walking, standing, sitting, and climbing whenever necessary. Activities include frequent physical exertion in body movement such as reaching, bending, and twisting. This position also requires frequent pulling and pushing of materials. There is frequent use of hand and power tools. Occasionally, crawling may be necessary. The position requires lifting of objects of 50 pounds on a frequent basis and over 50 pounds occasionally. Environmental Conditions: The occupant is required frequently to work outdoors, occasionally in extreme weather conditions such as rain, snow, and hot/cold extremes. He/she is also exposed to gasoline and/or diesel fumes, cleaning chemicals, and high noise levels. The occupant is expected to have foul weather gear, rubber gloves, steel toe protection when necessary.
