Associate Medical Examiner (Forensic Pathologist)

Job Summary The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) seeks an Associate Medical Examiner (Forensic Pathologist) for the Coastal Regional Laboratory in Pooler, Georgia. The successful candidate will perform medicolegal autopsies, generate examination reports, provide courtroom testimony, and consult with law enforcement and attorneys. The role may also include additional duties as directed by the Chief Medical Examiner. Duties and Responsibilities Conduct medicolegal autopsies under the Georgia Death Investigation Act. Generate examination reports for timely dissemination. Provide expert courtroom and deposition testimony. Consult with law enforcement agencies and attorneys. Perform other duties as directed by the Chief Medical Examiner. Minimum Qualifications Medical Doctor licensed to practice medicine in Georgia or ability to obtain licensure. Successful completion of an Anatomic Pathology residency and a Forensic Pathology fellowship from an accredited institution. Board certification by the American Board of Pathology (ABP) in Anatomic Pathology or in Anatomic Pathology and Clinical Pathology. Board certification or eligibility for certification by the ABP in Forensic Pathology. Conditions of Employment Candidates who have not yet achieved board certification in Forensic Pathology must sit for and successfully pass the board certification examination upon becoming eligible. Failure to do so will result in evaluation of continued employment. Applicants must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, and on-call duties, and be able to respond to telephone inquiries from home. Salary and Benefits Salary range: $260,000 – $280,000 per year, depending on qualifications and experience. The starting salary is commensurate with board certification status and work experience: From date of completion of Forensic Pathology Fellowship through the 5th full year of post‑graduate employment, without board certification: $260,000 per year. From date of completion of Forensic Pathology Fellowship through the 5th full year of post‑graduate employment, with Anatomic Pathology and Forensic Pathology board certification: $270,000 per year. From the beginning of the 6th post‑graduate year onward, with Anatomic Pathology and Forensic Pathology board certification: $280,000 per year. In addition to the listed salary, the selected applicant will receive an additional $50,000 per year in locality pay, paid semi‑monthly, provided the applicant works at the Coastal Regional Laboratory in Pooler. Georgia Medical Examiner Loan Repayment Program First year maximum amount: $12,000 Second year maximum amount: $18,000 Third year maximum amount: $24,000 Fourth year maximum amount: $30,000 Fifth year maximum amount: $36,000 Maximum repayment: $120,000 over five years of qualifying employment. Loan repayment begins after twelve consecutive months of qualified employment.
