Phlebotomist Outreach

SUMMARY Under supervision of the Manager Laboratory Outreach Services or guidance of the Lead Phlebotomist, performs responsibilities associated with obtaining blood and various other patient specimens in accordance with department procedures. Obtains samples ordered by physicians for routine and specialized tests on assigned unit. Takes samples from pediatric and adult patients on outpatient units. Transports specimens and completes basic records. Fosters patient and family centered care and nursing services in accordance with the Brown University Health and The Miriam Hospital’s mission, vision, values, with consideration of the life span, including all developmental stages as well as cultural patterns. RESPONSIBILITIES Perform functions in the computer system to assure proper collection and documentation of patient specimens. Register patients and order tests following established policies for identification, verification, test ordering, medical necessity, and document scanning. Perform related clerical activities such as sort and file records, daily checklists, answering phones, report delivery, and receiving patients into clinical/treatment area. Maintain and monitor standing orders for expiration and renewals, ensuring tasks are completed. Provide patients with forms for tests and give instructions regarding special preparation necessary prior to specimen collection. Schedule venipunctures or capillary punctures according to priority and test type. Utilize computer-generated collection labels and refer to the Pathology Handbook to ensure specimens are collected in proper containers and meet special requirements. Verify patient identity and proper preparation prior to venipuncture, including fasting or special diet, and ensure universal precautions are observed. Obtain blood samples from patient by venipuncture or capillary technique. Alert nursing staff or supervisor to deviations from puncture or adverse patient conditions. Collect other specimen types such as throat culture if required. Process samples that require centrifugation and track specimen status. Obtain specialized test samples (thyroid-releasing hormone, therapeutic drug monitoring, D-Xylose tolerance) and verify volume and timing of dosage. Monitor patient for reactions, including diaphoresis or sleepiness if scheduled. Label, wrap, and transport samples according to type and urgency. Maintain records of sample procurement. Follow hospital policy and universal precautions in all duties. Perform other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS High school diploma or GED required. Phlebotomy certificate through a recognized accrediting agency and/or completion of a phlebotomy certificate program with a formal internship demonstrating 100 successful venipunctures. In lieu of internship, 6 months of phlebotomy experience may be considered. In lieu of certification, 5+ years of direct phlebotomy experience may be considered. Ability to perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on adults, children, and infants. Interpersonal skills to obtain and provide information to patients and explain procedures effectively to allay fears and anxiety. Demonstrated knowledge and skills to provide patient care considering aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns. Clerical skills to prepare and maintain records and reports, including keyboard proficiency. Familiarity with blood collection equipment, anticoagulants, special precautions and interference. Ability to distinguish chromatic colors. Phlebotomy certificate required. WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Inpatient care environment with considerable walking between units; physical effort may be required to handle uncooperative patients. Exposure to odors when handling specimens and to communicable diseases; risk minimized by adherence to infection control procedures. Manual dexterity required for venipunctures. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY None.

PAY RANGE $18.13 - $29.90.
