Role Overview

The primary responsibility of a phlebotomist is to aid in the execution of assigned tasks, problem-solving, training, and proposing improvements to work procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities

Hands-on experience with blood draws, specimen labeling, specimen centrifugation, maintenance data recording, decontamination, patient information updating, etc. Following established protocols when collecting and storing specimens. Clearly and courteously explaining the venipuncture process or other specimen collection processes, and demonstrating techniques with straight needles and butterfly needles. Complete understanding of all physicians’ orders. Matching specimen tubes with laboratory requisition forms, labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing specimens as per test orders. Carefully checking test requisitions against scripts to ensure accuracy. Properly packaging specimens for transportation. Storing specimens at correct temperatures, placing them in appropriate containers, labeling accurately, and following transport protocols to maintain specimen integrity. Adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations. Participation in annual departmental training sessions. Answering phone calls, providing lab results information to address queries.

Minimum Requirements

Valid Phlebotomy certification as required in the state of employment. At least 6 months of venipuncture experience in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. High School Diploma or GED. At least 2 years of prior experience.
