Depending on need and availability, positions within this classification typically average approximately 25-30 hours per week with the possibility of additional assignments such as field trips, athletic events, etc.

Under general supervision of the administrator of the Transportation department, operates school buses on regularly scheduled passenger routes transporting students and school groups to and from schools, events, and on special field trips, in accordance with requirements of school transportation schedules and traffic laws.

Applicant Filing Information: This recruitment is open to the public. An eligibility list will be established to fill vacancies for full time, part time, evening, summer, and substitute positions throughout the duration of the eligibility list. Eligibility lists typically last for six months. Vacant positions are filled from the top three ranks. Pursuant to PC Rule 6.2.10, the eligibility list established for this recruitment may be used for another related classification at the same or lower salary.

Applicants must provide the Personnel Commission with a copy of the following at the time of application (you may upload the documents to your online application):

• Current three-year driving record (request a form "K4" at a local California DMV office or via mail request by filling out a California DMV INF 1125 form by visiting:
• Type-1 School Bus Special Driver Certificate with code 0, 1, or 6 restrictions (from DMV)
• Class A or Class B California Driver License with passenger endorsement or equivalent
• Current medical certificate approved by the DMV
• Current first aid card

Only applicants who supply the above documents will be tested.

Duties include:

• Drives a school bus or transportation vehicle over assigned routes in accordance with an established time schedule.
• Transports children to and from school.
• Loads and unloads students safely at designated stops and on study trips.
• Adheres to District policies and procedures regarding student discipline, and public contact with parents and community members.
• Performs daily safety inspections.
• Stops traffic and escorts children across streets, when necessary.
• Prepares daily reports on student loads, mileage, type of trip, and standby time.
• Reports problems or equipment malfunctions.
• Transports children with special needs.
• Washes, sweeps, mops, and polishes the interior of a school bus or transportation vehicle.
• Performs minor first aid.
• Cleans up after ill children.

Other related duties may include:

• May remove graffiti from bus seats.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Physical demands include sitting, pulling, climbing stairs, stooping/bending, using fingers repetitively, twisting or applying pressure with wrists or hands repetitively, using both hands and/or legs simultaneously, having rapid mental/muscular coordination, speaking clearly, hearing, having depth perception, having color vision/distinguish shades, seeing small details and for long distances, operating mobile motorized equipment, driving a vehicle.

Work environment includes working inside and outside, in changing temperatures to over 90°, gas, exhaust, and cleaning solvent fumes, dust (moderate to high concentrations of silica or allergenic dust), odors, moving vehicles, exposure to minor and severe contagious illnesses/diseases (colds, flu, tuberculosis, measles, mumps, chicken pox, hepatitis), in direct contact with the public, students, district personnel.

Education: No education required.

Experience: No experience required.

Special requirements include:

• Possession of a Type-1 School Bus Special Driver Certificate issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
• Possession of a valid Class A or Class B California Driver License with passenger endorsement or equivalent, including current medical certificate approved by the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
• Must be able to be insured, and continue to be insurable, by the District's liability insurance carrier.
• Applicants must provide the Personnel Commission Office with a copy of their current ten year driving record, obtainable from any office of the California Department of Motor Vehicles, at the time of application.
• This classification has been designated as safety-sensitive in accordance with Public Law 102-143 and requires a pre-employment drug test as well as a continued drug-free lifestyle for continued employment.

Knowledge of:

• Safe driving practices.
• Basic first aid.
• Basic safety and maintenance requirements of automotive equipment.
• Provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code and the Education Code and the California Administrative Code, Title 13 applicable to the transportation of students.

Ability to:

• Drive a Type-1, 76 passenger, or more, standard shift or automatic transmission school bus with air brakes safely and efficiently.
• Maintain appropriate student behavior on a school bus.
• Follow oral and written directions.
• Learn the proper methods of bus safety inspections and maintenance.
• Handle situations with tact and diplomacy.
