Assistant Professor OF Philosophy

The Religion department at Reed College invites applications for afull-time, Assistant Professor tenure track appointment in BuddhistStudies/East Asia to commence August, 2027. While sub-fields areopen and our department supports interdisciplinarity, we areespecially interested in scholars trained explicitly in thetheories and methods of religious studies whose research orteaching might engage in one or more especially desired domains: environmental humanities; comparative race and ethnicity; film and media studies. We are open to scholars with the relevantlinguistic training who specialize in Buddhist Studies in anyhistorical period or geographical complex in what is broadlyconceived as East Asia. Candidates must have successfulcollege-level teaching experience and an ambitious researchprogram. They must have a Ph.D. in hand by the start of theappointment. Located in Portland, Oregon, Reed is a liberal arts college withapproximately 1300 students that offers a demanding academicprogram to bright and dedicated undergraduates. Reed College is onthe semester system with a teaching load of five courses per year,plus senior thesis advising. Reed also supports a robust Humanitiescurriculum.
