GENERAL PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE POSITION:
The Associate Director of Academic Advising serves as a key leader within Enrollment Management and Student Success and supports the Academic Advising unit in partnership with the Director of Academic Advising. This position provides leadership for advising operations, student retention and persistence initiatives, completion strategies, and registration support efforts that promote student success and equitable outcomes.
Using a developmental and case management advising approach, the Associate Director assists students in defining academic, career, and personal goals while supporting advisors and staff in delivering comprehensive, student-centered advising services. The Associate Director collaborates extensively with Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Enrollment Services, and Registration to support institutional priorities related to student engagement, retention, completion, enrollment, and progression.
This position assists with the supervision, training, and development of advising and administrative staff; coordinates strategic student outreach and intervention efforts; and supports campus-wide initiatives that improve student experience and promote persistence to credential completion.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supports the Academic Advising department in partnership with the Director of Academic Advising, supporting the strategic vision, daily operations, assessment efforts, and continuous improvement of advising services.
- Assist with supervision, training, scheduling, and professional development of academic advisors and administrative staff to ensure high-quality, student-centered advising services.
- Support institutional retention, persistence, completion, and enrollment goals through proactive advising interventions, outreach campaigns, and data-informed student success initiatives.
- Collaborate with Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and other campus and systemwide partners to develop and implement strategies that improve student progression, registration completion, credential attainment, and overall student success.
- Assist with the coordination and implementation of registration initiatives, including registration fairs, enrollment and retention campaigns, academic planning efforts, and student outreach related to registration and course progression.
- Utilize student success data, early alerts, academic standing information, and institutional metrics to identify at-risk students and coordinate targeted interventions that support retention and completion.
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to student development and success through advocacy, adaptability, collaboration, approachability, problem-solving, and support.
- Provide developmental academic advising that assists students in clarifying academic, transfer, and career goals using student development, human development, and student learning theories.
- Assist students in interpreting placement scores, academic program requirements, degree maps, transfer pathways, curriculum requirements, and pre-requisites.
- Support students in understanding registration procedures, enrollment timelines, academic policies, and processes necessary for successful semester completion.
- Maintain current knowledge of institutional academic programs, curriculum changes, student policies, advising technologies, and student success best practices.
- Coordinate with campus departments to ensure accuracy and consistency of advising communications, materials, and student-facing resources.
- Maintain working knowledge of financial aid processes, academic standing policies, and institutional support resources to effectively assist students and make appropriate referrals.
- Manage an advising caseload in a manner that promotes student engagement, persistence, retention, and successful credential completion through proactive communication and case management strategies.
- Assist students in developing individualized Academic Completion Plans and support ongoing academic progress monitoring.
- Monitor student progress through regular communication, appointments, interventions, assessments, and documentation.
- Maintain accurate advising records and documentation in compliance with College policies, FERPA regulations, and professional standards.
- Foster collaborative and supportive relationships with students, faculty, staff, and external stakeholders.
- Assist with assessment, reporting, and evaluation of advising outcomes, retention efforts, and student success initiatives.
- Utilize communication and outreach strategies that engage students and the college community in the academic advising and student success process.
- Engage in behaviors that create an inclusive environment in which all people are valued, respected, and supported.
- Participate in professional development opportunities, professional organizations, campus committees, and institutional initiatives related to advising, student success, retention, and completion.
- Attend and support registration events, orientation programs, enrollment activities, and other student-facing initiatives, including evening or occasional weekend events as needed.

SUPERVISION GIVEN: Academic Advisors and Administrative Support Staff (as assigned)
- Bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, counseling, social work, higher education, or related field required.
- Master’s degree in higher education, college student personnel, counseling, leadership, student affairs administration, or related discipline preferred.
- Minimum of three (3) years of progressive experience in academic advising, student success, enrollment management, retention initiatives, admissions, career counseling, or related higher education field required; or one (1) year of experience with a Master’s degree.
- Previous supervisory, team leadership, or project management experience preferred.
- Demonstrated experience supporting student retention, persistence, completion, registration, or enrollment initiatives preferred.
- Experience working with diverse student populations and commitment to inclusive communication and equitable student support required.
- Excellent communication, organizational, problem-solving, critical thinking, and time management skills required.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, student-centered team environment while demonstrating initiative and leadership.
- Working knowledge of student information systems, advising technologies, databases, spreadsheets, word processing, email platforms, and student success technologies required.
- Strong administrative, analytical, organizational, and customer service skills required.
