Assistant Director of Development, Wilmer Eye Institute
The Johns Hopkins University
Assistant Director of Development, Wilmer Eye Institute Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) supports Johns Hopkins’ focus on research, teaching and patient care, and its role as a national and global leader in higher education. We create and foster enduring relationships that result in advocacy and philanthropic support for Johns Hopkins University & Medicine—strengthening the institution through partnerships with donors, alumni, volunteer leaders, faculty, students, staff, and patients. The Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine (FJHM) is the dedicated development and alumni relations team supporting the entities that comprise Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM), including clinical departments, hospitals, satellite clinics, and the School of Medicine. We contribute to Johns Hopkins Medicine’s mission of patient care, research, and education through securing philanthropy, building and maintaining donor and alumni relationships, and supporting institutional priorities. FJHM partners closely with institutional leaders, faculty, and clinicians to engage alumni, patients, donors, and prospects in JHM’s work to advance medicine and improve the human condition. A valued member of the Wilmer Eye Institute Development team, the Assistant Director of Development will play a lead role in coordinating and supporting the activities of Wilmer’s Annual Fund donor and prospect population. The Assistant Director will be responsible for identifying and developing a strong pipeline of prospects to raise financial resources for the faculty and programmatic priorities of Wilmer. In partnership with gift officers, faculty, and administrators, this position will build and manage a portfolio of annual donors with a focus on the stewardship and solicitation of annual gifts and an eye towards moving donors to the major gift level. The duties of this role include communicating with patients, donors, prospects, leadership, department directors, faculty, administrators, and professional colleagues. This position requires independent judgment in the resolution of administrative challenges and the ability to perform under pressure with a high degree of accuracy, diplomacy, and confidentiality. The Assistant Director will utilize various tools and resources to identify and qualify potential donors and move prospects through the donor pipeline. This role works on a team of collaborative, self-starting fundraising professionals working together to advance the overall philanthropic priorities of the Wilmer Eye Institute. Key responsibilities: Develop a comprehensive understanding of the research, teaching and clinical programs and priorities of Johns Hopkins University, the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, and the Wilmer Eye Institute, to represent these needs both internally and externally. Manage a portfolio of approximately 125 donors and prospects, some of whom may be patients, alumni, or unaffiliated, with the goal to personally solicit, or arrange for volunteer or institutional solicitation. Engage the donors and prospects as appropriate, whether via discovery, cultivation, or stewardship. The primary focus will be on gifts in the range of $250 to $25,000. Manage Wilmer’s Annual Fund, developing a comprehensive phone call/mailing strategy to solicit, upgrade, and steward new and/or unmanaged annual donors to build a robust major gift and planned giving pipeline. Relay information to gift officers as appropriate. Work closely with the Office of Medical Annual Giving to produce unique-to-Wilmer mailings, as well as mailings specific to Doctors’ Day, end of calendar year, or end of fiscal year. Complete 75 or more meaningful prospect and donor visits and 100 or more substantive interactions per year. Performance targets also include benchmarks for funds raised, proposals developed and submitted, among others. Prepare and direct preparation of proposals, outreach and solicitation letters, and other cultivation and material for prospects and donors. Create and manage a process for Wilmer’s first-time donors for gifts $250+, coordinating with gift officers, as appropriate. Analyze data and track giving trends to identify new prospects capable of giving at the major gift level. Focus on developing prospects and identifying names as we build the Wilmer pipeline for the upcoming University-wide campaign. With the Executive Director and Director of Development, produce meaningful reports on fundraising activities of the office to assist with faculty, prospect strategy and donor meetings. This includes attending and producing reports for monthly Prospect Strategy meetings and offering ideas on how to prioritize potential prospect outreach. Serve as the primary point of contact for third-party fundraising campaigns, responding to inquiries, providing technical assistance, and fostering positive relationships to maximize fundraising success. Represent Wilmer at the Annual Giving Roundtable and the Annual Giving Liaison group, as well as other institutional groups within Development and Alumni Relations and the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine. Maintain an active role within the DAR/FJHM team, collaborate with colleagues, and participate in meetings and committees for the benefit of Johns Hopkins University and Medicine. Other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree. Two years related experience. Additional graduate level education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. Preferred Qualifications: Ability to work independently, manage and prioritize multiple projects, and maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality Excellent writing, editorial, and verbal communication skills Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team Experience working with broadly diverse groups of constituents such as donors, alumni, patients faculty, department directors, hospital and university administration, fundraising colleagues and/or institutional leadership preferred Strong computer literacy skills with the ability to learn new software, as well as familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite Demonstrated initiative, diplomacy, and a cooperative work ethic within a professional team Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment Knowledge of Johns Hopkins Medicine and/or development operations highly desirable Ability to travel and work occasional evening or weekend hours #J-18808-Ljbffr
