Nurse Practitioner

Summary The Surgical Nurse Practitioner – a Title 38 advanced practice nurse – is responsible for surgical care across multiple subspecialty surgical sections, including General Surgery, Vascular, Thoracic, Urology, Orthopedics, Plastics, Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose and Throat), Interventional Radiology, Podiatry, Ophthalmology, and Anesthesia. Care is provided in outpatient, inpatient, operating room (first assist), telehealth, video visits, and telephone settings. Duties The Registered Nurse I/Level 2 is an advanced beginner nurse who can demonstrate marginally acceptable performance and has enough real situations to recognize recurring meaningful situational components that are termed 'aspects' of the situation (Benner). In conjunction with the staff surgeon, prioritize, collaborate, and engage in facility performance measures to provide excellent care delivery processes efficiently and safely. Collaborate with Attending Surgeons to review and act on routine consults. Acquire knowledge and apply the nursing process to systems or processes at the unit/team/work group level to improve patient care. Acquire knowledge and strive to apply leadership by collaborating with others in process improvement activities. Support and enhance patient self‑determination. Utilize and apply available resources for patients and staff to address ethical issues. Identify and assess resource utilization and safety issues, reporting to management as appropriate. Acquire knowledge and skills to continue gaining expertise in the area of practice. Participate in educational activities to improve clinical knowledge and skills and enhance role performance. Evaluate practice of self using professional standards. Use group processes to identify, analyze, and resolve care problems. Seek out and participate in quality improvement activities that result in improved outcomes. Review and apply research to validate and change practice to improve patient outcomes. The Registered Nurse I/Level 3 is a competent nurse. Competence develops when the nurse begins to see his or her actions in terms of long‑range goals or plans. The plan dictates which attributes and aspects of the current situation are most important. The competent nurse lacks the speed and flexibility of the proficient nurse but has mastery and the ability to manage many contingencies. In conjunction with the staff surgeon, prioritize, collaborate, and engage in facility performance measures to provide excellent care delivery processes efficiently and safely. Assume responsibility for review of routine consults and communicate with Attending Surgeon and requesting providers regarding additional care needs. Apply the nursing process to systems or processes at the unit/team/work group level to improve patient care. Develop leadership by involving others in process improvement activities.
