Job Summary The Associate Head Athletic Trainer is responsible for assisting in the management of the sports medicine program and for the provision of athletic training services including the prevention, care, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries of all the University’s NCAA Division II intercollegiate athletic teams. Work is performed under general supervision and performance is evaluated on assignment completion and results achieved through the University's performance evaluation system. Organizational Relationships Reports to: Assistant Director of Athletics for Sports Medicine Supervises: Athletic Training Student Interns and student workers Essential Duties Assist in managing the day‑to‑day operations of the sports medicine program. Assist with athletic training services, including prevention, care, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries for all NCAA Division II intercollegiate teams. Serve as the primary athletic trainer for designated team(s). Provide first aid, emergency care for athletic‑related injuries, and determine appropriate medical referrals. Provide athletic training patient care during home and away practices and competitions. Organize and direct pre‑participation physical exams and postural/body composition screenings. Purchase, inventory, and monitor all supplies and equipment for Athletic Training. Maintain accurate and confidential injury record management. Assist with implementation of drug, alcohol, and substance awareness education. Authorize, maintain, and direct the use of the Athletic Training facility and equipment, including safety checks. Maintain communication with student‑athletes, coaches, the Assistant Director, and the Director of Athletics regarding injury status and medical issues. Educate student‑athletes and staff regarding institutional, departmental, and NCAA health‑care policies at annual orientations and as needed. Communicate and work directly with head coaches and the Head Sports Performance Coach to design and execute science‑based, sports‑specific strength and conditioning programs as needed. Collaborate with the Head Sports Performance Coach to ensure proper conditioning modifications when an injury is present. Serve as a liaison between Intercollegiate Athletics, attending physicians, Student Health Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, and visiting athletic training staff. Commit to and uphold all rules and regulations set forth by the University, the Lone Star Conference, and the NCAA with integrity. Work cooperatively with personnel in the athletics department, attend meetings, and represent the University positively in community, alumni, high school, club, media, and general public interactions. Additional Duties Attend seminars, conferences, and other professional development opportunities. Share knowledge and promote athletic training and TWU through clinics, workshops, and lecture opportunities. Participate, as appointed, on departmental, university, state, regional, and national committees. Assist in fundraising activities. Implement Athletics’ strategic plan as part of the Division of Student Life’s strategic plan. Perform other duties as requested. Education Master’s degree required. State of Texas Athletic Training licensed required. NATABOC certified required. American Red Cross or American Heart Association BLS CPR and First Aid certification required. First Aid and CPR instructor preferred. Experience Five years minimum of collegiate athletic training experience. Requirements Regular and reliable attendance at the University during scheduled days and work hours is an essential function of this position. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Provide qualified and adequate athletic training coverage for student‑athletes. Recruit and provide a healthy learning environment for student athletic trainers. Coordinate work with other employees, providing direct instruction or supervision as assigned. Adhere to all policies, rules, and regulations of the university, Lone Star Conference, and NCAA. Follow directives and be responsible for assigned tasks. Handle multiple tasks in a fast‑paced environment. Attend seminars, meetings, and professional development opportunities. Organize work effectively, prioritize objectives, and exercise independent judgment. Integrate resources, policies, and information to determine procedures and solutions. Apply budgeting and fiscal planning within constraints. Maintain effective work relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the public. Communicate effectively—verbally, by phone, in person, and in writing. Represent the department and University in a friendly, courteous, and professional manner. Respond to emergency situations in a timely manner. Use a personal computer and other office equipment, including university software and email.
