Project Architect

About Us HHJ is a full-service design-build firm based in Tacoma, Washington, specializing in commercial, industrial, and tenant improvement projects throughout the Pacific Northwest. Position Overview We are seeking a Project Architect to lead the design and technical execution of projects from early design through construction. This role requires a strong understanding of building systems, permitting processes, and coordination across multidisciplinary teams. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, proactive, and comfortable working in a fast-paced, collaborative design-build environment. You’ll work closely with senior staff and the construction team to develop drawings, coordinate with consultants, and assist with project delivery. Key Responsibilities Lead project design and documentation from schematic design through construction administration Coordinate with internal teams, consultants, and clients throughout all project phases Prepare and oversee production of construction documents and specifications Manage permitting processes and coordinate with local jurisdictions Review submittals, RFIs, and shop drawings during construction Ensure compliance with building codes, regulations, and client requirements Support budgeting, scheduling, and constructability efforts in collaboration with the construction team Mentor and support junior staff as needed Utilize emerging technologies (including AI tools) to improve design efficiency, coordination, and documentation workflows Qualifications Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Architecture Licensed Architect (preferred) or actively pursuing licensure 5-10+ years of professional experience in architectural design and documentation Strong knowledge of building codes, construction methods, and detailing Experience with commercial, industrial, or tenant improvement projects preferred Proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD (required) and Bluebeam a plus Familiarity with AI-driven design, documentation, or workflow tools or a willingness to learn and adopt new technologies Excellent communication, coordination, and problem-solving skills What We Offer Competitive salary based on experience and annual bonus Health, dental, and vision insurance (75/25 split employer/employee) Life Insurance Paid time off and holidays 401(k) with 25% company match Opportunities for professional growth and licensure support A forward-thinking environment that embraces innovation and new technologies Why Join HHJ?
