Bus Driver

Provides safe and efficient transportation for students and other authorized persons to and from school using established bus routes, as well as driving for special or extra activity trips as needed.

Essential Functions:

• Drive school bus on scheduled routes and/or other trips in support of district-approved activities within and outside the school district boundaries;
• Drive bus safely to destination and return while following all traffic and safety rules and regulations;
• Adhere to applicable state and federal laws, rules and regulations, board policies, and administrative rules;
• Follow school district procedures when driving assigned bus routes and keep to the assigned schedule. Pick up and drop off only authorized students/passengers at designated times/bus stops while making sure students depart from the bus at appropriate stops;
• Maintain control of students/passengers in relation to passenger safety and personal behavior, enforcing the bus rules in a fair and consistent manner. Report to Supervisor unsafe actions or conditions which require further attention;
• Keep assigned bus clean, making certain lights and rear windows are clean before each trip;
• Checks assigned bus for mechanical defects pre-trip and post-trip, using safety issues checklists, and checks bus interior for vandalism and excessive abuse, and immediately making the Transportation Director aware of any issues;
• Notify the proper authority in case of mechanical failure or lateness;
• Notify Transportation Director promptly of all accidents and complete required reports and complete drug test if applicable;
• Follow school district regulations/procedures for handling vehicle breakdowns and accident incidents;
• Complete all required reports promptly and accurately;
• Exercise responsible leadership when on out-of-district school trips;
• Notify the Transportation Director immediately of unsafe route conditions;
• Maintain a positive rapport/attitude with students, staff, parents, co-workers, and the community;
• accept constructive criticism and suggestions and seek to improve each performance responsibility;
• Maintain confidentiality in regards to any school operation or personnel;

Knowledge Skills and Abilities Required:

• Valid Driver's License/CDL which may require passenger/school bus/air brake endorsement;
• DOT physical certifying medical ability to maintain a state-certified DOT to drive a school bus;
• Successful completion of D.O.E. training programs.

Knowledge and Skills:

• Knowledge of driving laws and regulations;
• Adequate knowledge of equipment operation;
• Demonstrated skill in reading, writing, and communication with others;
• Ability to learn area and routes of school district;
• Ability to communicate, interact, and work effectively and cooperatively with all staff, students, parents, and community members;
• Adequate hearing & vision capabilities;
• Ability to acknowledge the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize universal precautions, utilize appropriate safety equipment, and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator;
• Such alternatives to the above that the Board of Education finds to be appropriate and acceptable.

Terms of Employment:

• Pay, benefits, and work year are to be determined by the board.

Evaluation:

Performance of this job to be evaluated at least annually by the Transportation Director.
