Job Description

The function of the position is the maintenance, repair, and installation of mechanical system components. Including repair & servicing of heating systems, pumps, air compressors, furniture, appliances, tools, building components, food preparation equipment, plumbing & other misc. items, located within the property of a correctional facility. The position will require hiring, training of and supervising prisoner work crews. The position is required to inspect the work completed by prisoner work crews. The position will complete assignments without direct supervision, using independent judgment to make decisions relating to specific work situations, and be responsible for other specific duties as assigned by the supervisor. Employee works outside and inside the secure perimeter of a multi level Correctional facility.

Required Education and Experience

Education Educational level typically acquired through completion of high school. Experience Maintenance Mechanic E9 Four years of experience assisting skilled trades workers in the mechanical or electrical trades, including two years equivalent to a Maintenance Mechanic 8. Maintenance Mechanic 10 Five years of experience assisting skilled trades workers in the mechanical or electrical trades, including one year equivalent to a Maintenance Mechanic E9.

Alternate Education and Experience

Completion of a recognized program in vocational training for the mechanical or electrical trades may be substituted for two years of experience assisting skilled trades workers.

New hires to the MDOC along with previous MDOC employees that are returning after being away from the department for more than two years will complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) either 40 hours or 80 hours of initial in-person training based on their level of offender contact and job classification. Vacation and Sick Leave: Eligible full-time employees receive between 15 and 35 personal days and 13 sick days per year that may be rolled over to the following year if not used. Eligible employees also receive an additional day each year for community service or school functions.

Paid Parental Leave: Eligible employees can take 12 weeks of paid leave immediately after a birth or adoption to allow needed time together at home with a new child.

Paid Holidays: Eligible employees receive 13 or 14 paid holidays each year including New Year's Eve and Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Election Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving Friday, Christmas Eve and Day.
