Senior Java Engineer

You'll build the API layer that powers native mobile experiences for a top-tier US retailer. The catch - and what makes this role different - is that we don't want a generic backend engineer. We want someone who has lived inside the mobile/native app world from the API side and understands why that lens matters. If you've ever had to design around "we shipped that endpoint two years ago and v3.4 of the app is still using it" - you're who we're looking for.



What You'll Do

• Design, build, and own Java-based APIs consumed by native iOS and Android clients
• Make architectural decisions that account for mobile release cycle realities - App Store latency, version fragmentation, irrevocable deployments
• Partner directly with native mobile engineers to shape contracts, not just publish them
• Lead within your pod: drive technical direction, mentor, push engineering standards
• Embed agentic AI workflows into your delivery - we use Gemini, and we expect systems-level usage (orchestration, multi-step automation, human-in-the-loop review), not just autocomplete
• Sit at the table with product and business - translate ambiguous requirements into resilient API designs

• 10+ years of Java backend engineering at production scale, with strong Spring/Spring Boot experience
• Proven experience designing APIs consumed by native mobile clients - this is non-negotiable. You should be able to walk through a real example of handling a breaking change while older app versions were still live in the wild
• Deep understanding of API versioning strategies, backwards compatibility patterns, and graceful deprecation
• pplied AI/agentic workflow experience - built or actively used systems where AI does the work, you review, the loop continues. Tactical Copilot usage doesn't clear this bar
• Onshore presence: confident in product/business conversations, drives discussion rather than waits for direction
• Track record of senior-level pod leadership - mentoring, code review rigor, raising the bar

• Experience with high-volume retail, e-commerce, or transactional API platforms
• Cloud-native deployment experience (AWS/GCP/Azure)
• Built API gateways, BFF (Backend-for-Frontend) patterns, or contributed to mobile SDK design
• Hands-on with observability for mobile-facing APIs (distributed tracing across app + backend)
