Minimum requirements:

• Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment as required in certain states
• At least 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a high-paced laboratory or hospital environment
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
• High School Diploma or GED
• Minimum 2 years of experience

The primary role of a phlebotomist is to aid in the execution of various assigned tasks, troubleshooting, training, and proposing workflow improvements.

Responsibilities of the position include:

• Experience in conducting blood draws, labeling samples, centrifuging specimens, documenting maintenance activities and decontamination, updating patient records, etc.
• Collect and preserve samples following established procedures.
• Clearly explain the process of venipuncture (blood extraction) and/or other specimen collection (e.g. urine or fecal) as needed in a clear and polite manner.
• Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
• Have a thorough understanding of all the physicians’ orders.
• Match laboratory requisition forms with specimen tubes.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as indicated by test orders.
• Verify all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Prepare samples for transportation.
• Store specimens at the required temperature, place them in the appropriate collection container/tube, label accurately, and follow different procedures outlined in the specific transport protocol to maintain specimen integrity.
• Understand and adhere to OSHA and DEP regulations.
• Attend annual departmental training sessions.
• Answer phone calls, read laboratory results to address inquiries.
