Job Details Job ID: 5729044 Application Deadline: Posted until filled Posted: May 20, 2026 6:00 AM (UTC) Starting Date: Jul 1, 2026 Position Type: 8.0 hrs/day Job Categories: Support Staff > Transportation Job Description Transportation Bus Driver - Lead Trainer Location : Transportation Department Non-Interim Position Duration : 12 mos, 8 hrs/day Grade 31/Step 5: $24.89/hour Start Date : 7/1/2026 Purpose Statement The job of Lead Bus Driver - Trainer is done for the purpose/s of supporting the educational process with specific responsibilities for providing classroom instruction and behind the wheel training of applicants and bus drivers; addressing school bus regulations and safety procedures; identifying training requirements; and maintaining required documentation for audit in compliance with state certification and district/state/federal requirements; and is frequently required to perform the functions of a school bus driver; and serves as the individual who leads the team of trainers. This job reports to the Director of Transportation. Essential Functions Directs the daily activities of the Bus Driver Trainer team, including assigning training caseloads and evaluating the effectiveness of their instructional methods. Audits, training sessions, and behind-the-wheel evaluations are conducted by other trainers to ensure consistency and adherence to District and State standards. Mentors and provides ongoing training for the trainer staff to keep them current on pedagogical techniques and new vehicle technologies (e.g., electric bus transitions). Primary Point of Contact for State and Federal Audits Ensures all driver files, medical clearances, and drug testing records are audit-ready at all times. Interprets New Transportation Laws and Regulations Updates District training manuals, safety protocols, and standard operating procedures (SOPs). Defines the Schedule for Driver Recertifications Manages the master schedule for the entire district’s driver recertifications to ensure zero lapses in legal driving status. Designs and Updates Training Programs Focuses on high-need areas like Special Education transport, student behavior management, and emergency response. Reviews Accident Reports and Near-Miss Data Identifies district-wide safety trends and implements corrective training measures to reduce liability and risk. Assists in identifying departmental needs for training equipment (e.g., simulators, first aid supplies) and provides data for budget justifications. Coordinates with Special Education and Student Services Aligns transportation procedures with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and student discipline codes. Acts as the second level of response for escalated inquiries from parents, school administrators, or law enforcement regarding driver performance or safety incidents. Provides Expert Testimony Delivers detailed reports regarding departmental training standards in the event of legal proceedings or formal grievance. Maintains Licenses for Bus Driving and Training Duties Maintains all required licenses to perform bus driving and training duties during emergencies or critical staffing shortages. Other Functions Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit. Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities SKILLS are required to perform multiple technical tasks, with the potential need to upgrade them to meet changing job conditions.
