Instrumentation and Controls Engineer

RecruitMilitary Placement Services

This role offers a competitive salary between $85,000 and $95,000 per year, along with opportunities for growth within a highly technical engineering environment. Employees work approximately 40 hours per week and are eligible for performance-based bonuses. The position provides a clear career progression path depending on technical interests and aptitude, with potential advancement into Senior I&C Engineer, Senior Systems Engineer, or System Architect roles. As part of a small but stable and growing company, engineers are given the autonomy to develop their expertise while contributing to complex, meaningful projects.

As an Instrumentation and Controls Engineer, you will focus heavily on system design-developing instrumentation and control solutions that support industrial processes and automation projects. This includes specifying components and software, producing industrial control panel designs that meet UL508A and UL698 requirements, and preparing technical documentation such as operation manuals, design submittals, and engineering estimates. You will collaborate closely with senior engineers and the drafting team to transform project specifications into fully realized designs. Most work occurs in the office environment using tools such as AutoCAD Electrical, but occasional site visits allow engineers to see their designs implemented in real-world environments such as wastewater facilities, steam systems, chemical storage areas, and other industrial operations.

Veterans with strong technical backgrounds are particularly well suited to succeed in this role. Officers or senior enlisted personnel with experience in electrical or mechanical engineering, system design, or technical program leadership will find many parallels with the responsibilities here. Those who have worked with electrical systems, instrumentation, integrated processes, or complex equipment-especially in environments that require careful planning, documentation, and system-level thinking-tend to transition smoothly into instrumentation and controls engineering. The role rewards individuals who are analytically strong, detail oriented, and comfortable reasoning through complex technical systems.

Located in the scenic West Michigan region, this role offers the opportunity to build an engineering career in an area known for its affordability, strong schools, and welcoming communities. The region provides access to lakes, hiking trails, and a wide range of outdoor activities, making it an appealing place to live for those who enjoy an active lifestyle. The company itself is a small but innovative engineering firm focused on stability, employee development, and technically challenging design work. With exposure to advanced industrial automation projects and a clear pathway for career advancement, this position provides a rewarding environment for engineers who want to develop deep expertise while making a tangible impact.
