Together, we will become the world's leading cancer reference laboratory.Position Summary:The Laboratory Assistant will assist the department technologist in performing various basic laboratory procedures using laboratory equipment to facilitate production. This in an entry level position in the clinical laboratory job family and employees in this position may not manipulate samples.Core Responsibilities:Records the required information in laboratory log books, specimen accession sheets, workflow drafts, etc., to ensure quality assurance of specimensPerforms simple laboratory tasks of operating equipment, printing extra labels, recording data, and specimen storage and retrieval and other clerical duties as assignedPrepares reagents for laboratory procedures as directed in the procedure manual and under the direct supervision of a certified technologistPerforms various housekeeping and/or maintenance tasks to keep laboratory and equipment in clean and operable conditionMaintains department inventory and orders supplies as neededResolves pending lists and finds missing samplesPerforms various filing, mailing, and copying tasks as neededDisposes of biohazardous material according to established proceduresCompletes training and competency checklists as neededSends and receives cases to and from satellite laboratoriesLoads, runs and unloads some automated testing proceduresAssists with the department quality improvement or safety programReports problems concerning individual cases, tests, equipment and supplies to laboratory supervisor or lead technologist to ensure timely resolutionRequirements:High School Diploma or equivalent; emphasis on science courses preferredPrevious experience in a similar capacity and knowledge of medical terminology preferredBasic understanding of laboratory techniques preferredGeneral knowledge on using MS Office programsEffective communication skills and strong organization skillsDetailed oriented and willingness to work independentlyMust be able to work in a fast paced, multi-tasking environment and maintain production and quality standardsMust be able to work in a biohazard environment and follow safety policies and standards outlined in the Safety ManualMust be able to lift up to 50 poundsNo certification requiredAll qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, national origin, religion, age, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, or protected veteran status.
