Staff AI/ML Engineer, Developer Productivity

About the Role Staff Engineer, part of the AV Developer Tools team within the AI Cloud and Developer Productivity organization. Responsible for delivering and maintaining tools that enhance the entire developer workflow at GM, with a focus on AI‑native tools, performance, observability, and secure workflows. Responsibilities Identify engineering pain points and propose, design, and implement reliable, scalable solutions. Influence the team’s technical roadmap and evaluate new tools through PoCs. Ship improvements to AV development toolchains that directly impact engineering productivity. Drive software engineering best practices and tooling that encourages them. Help steer the engineering culture and balance impact with technical debt. Mentor and grow engineers on the team. Set a high standard of accountability, deliver impact individually and with the team. Establish boundaries when receiving external requests that do not align with the team vision. Minimum Qualifications (Must‑Have) 5+ years of experience designing, building, and operating production systems at scale in the cloud. Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent work experience. Proficiency in designing highly scalable, reliable, and maintainable services. Strong experience writing production‑scale code in Go, Python, or similar languages. Solid understanding of Unix/Linux, SSH, networking fundamentals. Attention to detail and a desire to improve processes and systems. Leadership and influence skills, both internally and externally. Strong research, documentation, communication, and defense of proposals. Ability to make trade‑offs, prioritize, ship under pressure. Passion for mentoring junior engineers and for self‑driving technology. Preferred Qualifications (Nice‑to‑Have) Experience applying LLMs, skills, or MCPs to coding & review workflows. Hands‑on experience with GCP, Docker, and Kubernetes. Ownership or contribution to open‑source projects. Compensation Base salary range: $180,000 to $284,000.
