About the Position Please note: The salary range above represents this position's earning potential. The anticipated hiring range for this position: Grade 21 - $70,556 - $99,337, Grade 24 - $80,070 - $111,301 WHO WE ARE The is a civilian agency managed by professionals in the correctional field. To protect the public and citizens of Montgomery County by providing a wide range of constructive, professional correctional services for pretrial and convicted detainees. The medical staff at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility (MCCF) and Montgomery County Detention Center (MCDC) provide medical care and services to all incarcerated inmates in compliance with recognized health care, legal, and correctional standards. The facilities are accredited by the Maryland Commission on Correctional Standards (MCCS), the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC), and the American Correctional Association (ACA). Both facilities are staffed with nurses 24 hours a day and 7 days per week. Physicians and nurse practitioners provide on-site evaluation and treatment of acute and chronic medical conditions. WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR The Montgomery County Department of Correction and Rehabilitation is seeking candidates for the Correctional Health Nurses (CHN) I and II, which are registered nurses to work full-time at either the Montgomery County Correctional Facility (MCCF) in Boyds, Maryland or at the Montgomery County Detention Center (MCDC) in Rockville, Maryland, depending upon the area of specialty/interest and the needs of the Department. The individual selected for this position will be considered an "Essential Employee". Essential employees must report to work during periods of general emergency or liberal leave. This position may be filled as a Correctional Health Nurse I, Grade 21. There is a non-competitive promotional opportunity to Correctional Health Nurse II, Grade 24.
What You'll Be Doing
Work schedules require either eleven (11) and twelve (12) hour day shifts, totaling 80 hours over a 2 week pay period - some weekends and holiday work is required. The facility is open seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Shift bids are done annually and are based on seniority. This is full performance level professional nursing performed in the correctional environment. Work encompasses the entire clinical nursing process from planning and intake through discharge into the community (primary care, chronic care, case management, emergency triage, emergency services and infirmary nursing, including health promotion and disease prevention).
• Conducting intake screenings of newly incarcerated individuals
• Collection and analyzing client health data
• Administering immunizations and a wide range of oral medications and injections
• Providing client health supervision, counselling, guidance, and teaching directed toward health promotion and maintenance, disease prevention, and alleviation of specific health problems (e.g., those common to the correctional environment)
• Assessing and treating minor health problems; observing and recording temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respiration data and effects of medication Additional duties include:
• Initiating appropriate measures in emergency situations when a physician is not available.
• Providing guidance on technical and practical matters to newly assigned and lower grade nurses.
• Maintaining records, writing reports, assuring orderliness, maintaining supplies and equipment and the sanitation of the unit.
• Sterilizing instruments and supplies.
• Referring inmate-patients and families to available health and community services and providing follow-up services as required.
• Coordinating client care, providing one-on-one health guidance and teaching on health promotion and maintenance, disease prevention and alleviation of specific health problems.
• Conducting education classes for incarcerated individuals as assigned. Minimum Qualifications
If filled as a Correctional Health Nurse I: Experience: None. Education: Graduation from a registered education nursing program approved by the Maryland State Board of Nursing or an education program in registered nursing in any other state or country that the Board finds substantially equivalent to the program in Maryland. Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted. LICENSE: Possession of a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Maryland issued by the Maryland State Board of Nursing to practice registered nursing is required at the time of appointment. * If the license is temporary, a regular Maryland RN license must be obtained within ninety (90) days of appointment. Obtains continuing education as required by COMAR 10.53.04 for each renewal year. *The State of Maryland accepts as valid the current RN licensure from a candidate's primary state of residence if that state has an interstate compact with Maryland. The states having this interstate compact are Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
