About the Position

Job Title: CVICU RN Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12-hour Days Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum 2 years of experience License: RN License required Certifications: BLS, ACLS Must-Have: Fresh open heart experience preferred, but must have experience with patients greater than 6 hours post-op open heart. CRRT experience required. Temporary pacemakers and post-permanent pacemaker experience required. Acute MI pre/post cath experience required. Mediastinal/chest tubes experience required. Ventilator experience required. Hypothermia protocol experience required. Experience with specified drips is required. Arterial line experience required. IABP/Impella experience preferred. Hemodynamic monitoring/Swan-Ganz experience preferred. Must be able to titrate drips. Description: The unit has 18 beds with mixed acuity, accommodating step down and ICU status patients. Nurse to patient ratios are 1:1 for fresh hearts and devices, 1:2 for ICU status patients, and 1:3 for step down status patients. Common diagnoses include atrial fibrillation, heart blocks, bradycardia, NSTEMI, STEMI, cardiac arrest, hyper/hypotension, pulmonary embolisms, cardiogenic shock, heart surgery (CABG/valves), heart failure, and thoracic surgery (VATS, lobectomy, etc.). Charge nurses may work assignments on night shifts, but will take on a charge role rarely. The unit is supported by nurse aides; there is 1-2 PCTs per shift. Hospitalists or intensivists are in-house. Respiratory therapists are present in the ICU 24/7, and they utilize various equipment including vents, CPAP, BiPAP, high flow, and Trilogy. Monitor techs observe telemetry; however, RNs must read their own strips every four hours. Self-scheduling and block scheduling requests are allowed but may be adjusted during schedule balance periods. Every other weekend and holiday shifts may be required to meet unit needs. Travelers may float to other units, primarily ACU and ICU, but also to Med-Surg and Tele with a maximum of 6 patients. Royal blue scrubs are required for daily patient care. A one-week orientation is provided, including training and modules.
